Roeqiya Fris’ Instagram bio reads: “Dutch/Egyptian illustrator🐪 Inspired by Arab culture, fashion, and nature.” Currently based in Rotterdam, the talented illustrator has traveled the world and brought it back with her.
“I grew up in the Netherlands, but when I was a child I went a few times to Cairo with my parents, that was wonderful,” she shared with Berlin & Coconuts Blog. “My mother is from Egypt and my father from the Netherlands.”
Graduating from the Willem de Kooning Academy of Visual Arts in 2005, she has worked as a fine art teacher, ran a creative workshop company, and now tends mainly to her creative work.
Her intricate illustrations focus mainly on women, creating multi-layered scenes that are full of color and splendor. “Women are inspiring for me, maybe because I grew up with 3 sisters,” she said. “Most of the women I paint are inspired by my sisters.”
