Jeremy Geddes Oil Paintings Deliver Surreal Scenes With Photorealistic Quality

At first glance, the works of New Zealand-born artist Jeremy Geddes look like stills from a disaster movie or a surreal work from a talented digital artist. But they are neither. Instead, they are a result of painstaking attention to detail and a testament to a great artistic talent.

Geddes creates astonishing oil paintings that deliver surreal scenes to viewers in photorealistic quality. Each brushstroke is purposeful and placed to bridge the gap between art and reality, but the things that appear on the canvas seem hardly possible: astronauts melting or disintegrating in unknown dimensions, spacecraft crashing into buildings, cars balancing on their tips, and much more.

The scenes featured in Geddes’ paintings are hard to explain and pose more questions than they answer. This is exactly what the artist wants.

“With these paintings, I’m trying to leave the narrative ambiguous and open to interpretation, whilst juxtaposing enough disparate elements to make some sort of interpretation necessary. I’m keen to never give enough clues to block any potential explanation the viewer might bring. I want to spark questions, rather than answer them,” said Geddes ahead of the recent Thinkspace Projects exhibition.
