Graphic designer, illustrator, and letterer Mélanie Johnsson designs for and collaborates with brands across different fields such as luxury, travel, cosmetics, art, and fashion. Born in France, and currently based in the UK, she also runs illustration and brush lettering workshops in London and beyond.
“I am very lucky to come from a family of super creative people: photographers, designers, engineers,” noted Johnsson in an interview for McQueens. “As far as I can remember, I’ve always loved drawing and making things, so I knew from an early age that graphic design was the way to go! I developed my illustration and lettering skills after I graduated when I found myself drawing all the time while traveling across South America. That’s how I discovered and refined my personal style.”
Known for her uplifting messages and eco-friendly ethics, her illustrations often include positive quotes and mantras. “Do not for anyone to tell you that you can do it,” reads one message, written in bold hand type; “If you don’t learn to love the Planet first, there’s no way you can learn to protect it,” reads another one.
Her messages are often accompanied by minimalistic, yet colorful, illustrations, making for an overall positive vibe. But when it comes to her sources of inspiration, Johnsson admits it’s hard for her to pin them down. “I get inspired by so many random things,” she says. “Could be a book I loved, a fashion editorial that I saw online, people I met, places I visited and that stuck with me. I get really inspired when I travel; I love immersing myself in a new culture and seeing things differently. I am obsessed with colors, patterns, and people.”
