Japanese artist Noriyuki Saitoh captures the intricate details of an insect in his Bamboo Insects collection. Each sculpture, consist of the creature’s wings, legs, and antennae, is made of thinly sliced bamboo. The natural material’s versatility gives variety of colors and textures to each creature.

Saitoh engages a considerate process of paring down each insect to its essential forms that give the impression of life.

“Since we are not preparing specimens and replicas, we strictly measure the dimensions and prioritize the appearance impressions, features, and senses rather than proportions being created exactly… Because it is the eye of the person to appreciate, I think that it makes little sense to make details that can not be distinguished by human eyes. Rather, it seems that reality as a work is born if you thin out the elements and leave room to imagine,” the artist wrote on his website.
