Jodi Levine will inspire you to roll up your sleeves and get crafting. “Love using items from the supermarket and recycle bin!” reads her Instagram caption (indeed, most of her arts and crafts projects require little to no money). A mother of two and a lifelong crafter, Levine studied painting formerly in RISD before returning to her original passion. “When I look back at my time in art school, I loved every minute of it but I also felt a little lost in that I didn’t fit into any one department,” she later admitted in an interview with David Stark.

“The world has changed so much since I was in school and the word ‘craft’ was perceived very negatively,” she added. “The whole design/DIY/craft world has exploded which is great for those of us that like to make stuff and dabble with lots of media and don’t fit neatly into the art school categories.” It was also great for Levine, having landed the perfect job in the Craft Department at Martha Stewart Living, where she worked for over 19 years.

Now based in Brooklyn with her husband Fred and two sons, Sammy and Lionel, she continues pursuing her passion, transforming everyday items into inspiring ideas. “I look back on what was distracting me from my fine art work and it was what I have ended up doing professionally,” she notes. “But I am so grateful for my fine arts education. It gave me the creative tools needed in any area of design like color, composition and an appreciation for the natural world.”

Now, she passes on her knowledge to others, featuring regularly in programs like The Today Show, MARTHA, NY1, CBS Morning Show, and The View. You can also follow her tips and trick via Instagram. Keep your hands busy!

For *DAY 4* of our holiday craft share-fest Britney Jepsen/ @houselarsbuilt designed the most beautiful menorah that I have ever seen!! (In my 19 years as a craft editor at Martha Stewart Living, I was tasked many times with creating fresh Hanukkah ideas, so I know firsthand how hard it is to reinvent the menorah!) Britney’s work is always gorgeous, original, and she's the original #crafttherainbow -er! 🌈 REPOST from @houselarsbuilt…………………………………… "Thrilled to be participating in a craft share with some of my favorite makers! Every day a different maker shares a handmade gift in a different color to form a rainbow (you know we love a good #crafttherainbow !). Today it’s our turn and we’re been challenged with blue! I’ve been wanting to do a menorah for ages so this was the perfect time to do so. We used my favorite Martha Stewart Christmas tree as our inspiration and turned it into paper flowers, of course. Templates and instructions on Lars today! Make sure you visit the whole squad and see what they’re creating!” ………………………………………………………… This project is a piece of a collaborative effort to spread the love of handmade gifts with 12 crafty makers. From December 9th to December 20th, each crafter will post a different DIY gift in a different color to form a beautiful rainbow, so make sure to check us all out in our feeds and our stories! @damasklove @darcymiller @aliceandlois @houselarsbuilt @corriebethmakes @thussfarrell @mer_mag @handmadecharlotte @sayyesblog @robert_mahar @supermakeit @amandakingloff . #holidayrainbow #crafterswelove #handmadegift #handmadegiftrainbow

For embroidery artist Lauren Holton, the needle and thread came almost intuitively. Amidst the joys and demands of motherhood, she taught herself the art of the stitch, carving out time for embroidery daily to satisfy her insatiable creativity and a love of all things handmade.

“Honestly, I have almost no actual previous experience as an artist,” she relayed in an interview with She’s So Bright. “Somehow embroidery was the thing that really unleashed everything that had been rolling around in my head all this time. I do, however, think I have a pretty good eye for design and color.”

Indeed, scrolling through her Instagram page, color seems to be the driving force throughout her work. Inspired by both nature and interior design, her work includes floral and botanical themes, as well as abstract designs, all immersed in color. “I’ll come up with a color palette that I’m dying to use, let it simmer for a while, and decide what type of content it’s most suited to,” says Holton. “I’m a big fan of both landscapes and interior design (they seem contradictory, I know), and love to pull inspiration from both of those places. I’m also very feminine, so I’m really drawn to floral designs, pink, soft textures, etc., and I think those things definitely influence my designs.”

Her works might just inspire you to get stitching!
