This Café in Mumbai Is Almost Entirely Made of Cardboard

Cardboard Bombay is a café that is made almost entirely from cardboard. Located in Mumbai’s central business district, the project was designed by Nuru Karim, founder of Mumbai-based architectural firm NUDES.

They used 100% recyclable and biodegradable material to form the interior of the café. The team selected this kind of material because of its sustainability, versatility, and has excellent sound absorption properties. NUDES has tested the material in real world constraints including humidity, water resistance, and temperature changes.

The design of the restaurant includes free flowing geometry, customized furniture and fixtures sculpted from cardboard. The table tops are infused with wax treatment to prevent water absorption. The project wanted to raise awareness about the use of environment-friendly materials to protect the earth’s resources towards a sustainable future.
