Guy Laramée is Nova Friburgo, Brazil-based artist who transforms discarded books into mountain-like sculptures. In his works, Laramée explores the idea of “erosion of cultures” and that ultimate knowledge “could very well be an erosion instead of an accumulation.”

Laramée uses various carving methods, including high-pressure water, to alter old encyclopedias and dictionaries. He then paints them to resemble rocky formations seen in nature.

From afar, these pieces look like mountain landscapes, similar to ones found in Pico da Caledônia national park, which the artist sees through the windows of his studio. But when looked closer, the remains of covers, pages, bindings, and titles are still clearly visible.

“Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains. They erode a bit more and they become hills,“ Laramée explains in his artist statement.  “Then they flatten and become fields where apparently nothing is happening. Piles of obsolete encyclopedias return to that which does not need to say anything, that which simply IS. Fogs and clouds erase everything we know, everything we think we are.”

Laramée displayed his intriguing book transformations in numerous exhibitions around the world, including his native Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. He also frequently shares his newest pieces on social media. Check out more of them below.

British artist Katharine Morling doesn’t strive for realism while creating her sculptures. Instead, she goes to great lengths to move away from it in a unique and creative way.

Morling is known for her one-of-a-kind sculptures of familiar objects, including cameras, bags, and typewriters, that look like drawings. With uneven shapes and wobbly black lines, it seems like they have been pulled from a piece of paper and placed in a 3D realm.

“Each piece, on the surface, an inanimate object, has been given layers of emotion and embedded with stories, which are open for interpretation,” Morling explains in her artist statement. “The works I create are pieces of narrative in my progressing story, one piece leads to the next and I work very instinctively. My work represents my inner searching, shown outwardly in domestic and uncanny scenes.”

Morling’s captivating sculptures earned her international recognition. She has exhibited her works across the world while also receiving numerous awards, including the first prize at the World Crafts Council Triennial.

Morling plans to share her creative process with art enthusiasts in 2026, when she’ll open the doors of her studio and allow the public to see how her pieces are created and take part in special workshops. Until then, you can admire more of her creations below.

Through her surreal sculptures, Canadian artist Ellen Jewett takes the special bond between animals and plants to an even deeper level. Instead of being interdependent on each other like in the real world, they actually become one in the world created by her art.

Jewett’s sculptures combine the features of animals and plants in a way that makes them look like they came straight out of a fantasy movie. There are turtles with trees growing on their back, deer with branches and twigs instead of horns, and wolves covered with flowers as part of their fur.

Jewett mostly creates smaller sculptures that fit in the palm of one’s hand. But despite this, she manages to pack each piece with an astonishing amount of details. In order to do so, she relies on her formal studies in fine art, anthropology, and zoology, as well as work experience in medical illustration and exotic animal care.

“Plants and animals have always been the surface on which humans have etched the foundations of culture, sustenance, and identity. For myself, natural forms are a continual source of fascination and deep aesthetic pleasure,” Jewett explains on her website.

Stefan Pabst is a German artist who specializes in 3D drawings. His works are so realistic that it seems like they could jump off the paper at any moment.

Looking at Pabst’s works, you get the feeling that he can achieve the 3D effect with any drawing, regardless of the subject. More impressively, he only needs a piece of paper and some colored pencils or a regular pen to do it.

Pabst originally focused on traditional oil portraits but became so good at making them that he started feeling a lack of creative challenges. While working on one portrait, he observed a glass and felt a sudden urge to paint it in 3D.

While he discovered that painting in 3D is much harder than he realized, Pabst successfully completed his side project and decided to share it with internet users. His artwork quickly went viral and he realized he had discovered his new passion.

“That moment sparked something big. What started as an experiment became a whole new artistic path for me. Since then, 3D art has become an essential part of my creative journey,” Pabst shared in a recent interview with Bored Panda.

Paola Grizi is an Italian artist who creates stunning and unique sculptures in which faces emerge from the pages of books. The faces appearing in Grizi’s sculptures, which are made from terracotta and bronze, take on a wide range of expressions. Some have signs of struggle from their exhausting endeavor, others seem to be amazed, and some are reluctant to show themselves. However, they all aim to evoke emotion in viewers.

Grizi is an avid fan of the written word, studying Classics and Italian Literature and working as a journalist before embarking on a career as an artist. But she actually started creating her signature pieces by accident.

She initially had an idea to create a face that emerges from panels. But when she started working on this sculpture, Grizi noticed that those panels reminded her of book pages. It was at that point that she realized that this could be a great way to incorporate her love for books into her artistic expression.

“My challenge today is to bring lightness and dynamism to a static material, to thin the bronze, to set the clay in motion. My books and pages tell stories and emotions through enigmatic faces and engravings on time-worn sheets. The words are semi-legible, comprehensible only in the moment of creation,” Grizi shared in a recent interview with DeMilked.

You’ll rarely see a painter commit themselves to painting just one subject all over again. It can be repetitive and most artists run away from repetition. However, Boston-based artist Stuart Dunkel doesn’t seem to have this issue.

The majority of Dunkel’s artistic output in the past decades revolved around creating adorable oil paintings featuring a small white mouse named Chuckie. The mouse usually interacts with food and toys or engages in mischievous adventures.

Dunkel, who has been engaged in visual arts since the 1990s, started painting Chuckie as a joke. His wife was scolding him about leaving crumbs in the kitchen, so he decided to turn it into a joke. He painted a mouse as part of the still painting he was working on and said it was actually the mouse who is creating all that mess.

After sharing laughs with his wife, Dunkel decided to submit the painting to a gallery show and immediately sold it. He began creating more mouse paintings and they became his calling card.

“The mouse series was really successful and people really responded to it. I’m very mischievous so the mice paintings are a good vehicle for who I am,” Dunkel said in an interview with The Avid Pen.

Banksy is arguably the world’s most famous street artist. He is known for his thought-provoking stencils and graffiti that feature social commentary and satire. But what most people don’t know is that Bansky also created a number of oil paintings over the course of his career. Now, one of them is being auctioned off by Blink 182 singer and bassist Mark Hoppus.

The painting, titled “Crude Oil (Vettriano),” will be offered for sale through auction house Sotheby’s on March 4 as part of a modern and contemporary art event that will also feature works of Pablo Picasso and Roy Lichtenstein. The piece, which has been in Hoppus’ collection for more than a decade, is expected to fetch a price of $6 million.

“We loved this painting since the moment we saw it. Unmistakably Banksy, but different. We bought it because we loved it. It’s borne witness to our family over these past dozen years,” Hoppus said in a statement. “This painting has meant so much to us and been such an amazing part of our lives, and now I’m excited for it to be out there in the world.”

“Crude Oil (Vettriano)” was first presented at Banksy’s exhibition show Crude Oils: A Gallery of Remixed Masterpieces, Vandalism and Vermin in 2005. The painting is based on Jack Vettriano’s artwork “The Singing Butler” and features Banksy’s signature take on current issues. It depicts a couple dancing while a butler holds an umbrella over them like in the original but with the addition of two men in hazard suits disposing of toxic waste in the background.

Embroidery artist Heather Rios’ Instagram bio holds a bit unusual line that says: “IT’S NOT CAKE.” Once you scroll through her posts, you realize this warning makes perfect sense.

Rios specializes in creating impressively deceiving embroidery cakes. Despite being “baked” with threads, her desserts have a mouthwatering effect with their colorful frosting, rich-looking whipped cream, and perfectly baked sponge.

Rios creates both classic embroidery art and 3D embroidery pieces while constantly expanding the “menu” of her pastry shop. You’ll find decadent cake slices, doughnuts, cupcakes, fairy bread, and much more.

In order to achieve the realistic look of her cakes, Rios uses various embroidery techniques, including punch needles, as well as polymer clay. For finishing touches, this talented artist turns to acrylic paint, foam, and paper.

“I love that a lot of my process is actually similar to making real cakes. When I make polymer clay sprinkles, I bake them in my oven. I use real pastry bags to pipe frosting onto them,” Rios explained her creative process in one of her Instagram videos.

Rios enjoys sharing her newest embroidery cakes on social media while also providing a behind-the-scenes look into the process of making them. She also sells her creations through her Etsy shop. Continue scrolling to check out more of them.

At first glance, the works of New Zealand-born artist Jeremy Geddes look like stills from a disaster movie or a surreal work from a talented digital artist. But they are neither. Instead, they are a result of painstaking attention to detail and a testament to a great artistic talent.

Geddes creates astonishing oil paintings that deliver surreal scenes to viewers in photorealistic quality. Each brushstroke is purposeful and placed to bridge the gap between art and reality, but the things that appear on the canvas seem hardly possible: astronauts melting or disintegrating in unknown dimensions, spacecraft crashing into buildings, cars balancing on their tips, and much more.

The scenes featured in Geddes’ paintings are hard to explain and pose more questions than they answer. This is exactly what the artist wants.

“With these paintings, I’m trying to leave the narrative ambiguous and open to interpretation, whilst juxtaposing enough disparate elements to make some sort of interpretation necessary. I’m keen to never give enough clues to block any potential explanation the viewer might bring. I want to spark questions, rather than answer them,” said Geddes ahead of the recent Thinkspace Projects exhibition.

Adrian Arleo is a ceramic sculptor from Minnesota who creates thought-provoking sculptures that combine human, animal, and natural imagery in an unexpected way.

Arleo’s pieces serve as an examination of the relationship between humans and the world that surrounds us. According to the artist, she aims to create a “kind of emotional and poetic power” and the surreal feel of her works definitely achieves that with visuals of human hair curled up into a cat, dogs made of buds and petals, female figures interacting with nature, and much more.

“Often there’s a suggestion of a vital interconnection between the human and non-human realms; the imagery arises from associations, concerns, and obsessions that are at once intimate and universal. The work frequently references mythology and archetypes in addressing our vulnerability amid changing personal, environmental, and political realities. By focusing on older, more mysterious ways of seeing the world, edges of consciousness and deeper levels of awareness suggest themselves,“ Arleo explains on her website.

Adrian Arleo has been making ceramic sculptures for the past four decades. Her works were exhibited across the United States and abroad, receiving widespread recognition and finding their home in both private and public collections. Continue scrolling down to check out more of them.
