Joshua Davison is a self-taught artist from New Zealand who creates colorful flower paintings. However, what sets Davison apart from artists who focus on similar subjects is that he almost exclusively uses palette knives in his practice.

Davison’s paintings are particularly captivating due to their sculptural effect. He starts off by adding slabs of paint, switching between oil and acrylic, onto canvas and then builds layers until an image of a blossoming flower appears. This causes the flowers to “pop off” the canvas.

According to Davison, one of the most important goals he aims to achieve in his creative practice is originality. He developed his techniques and methods without being influenced by conventional thought and strives to continuously explore his creativity.

“I believe the term original is very loosely thrown around these days and that true originality is incredibly rare but something that can be worked towards and earned,” Davison told Colossal in a recent interview. “The prospect of one day achieving truly original work is the single biggest motivator for me as an artist.”

Davison mainly exhibits his works in art galleries in his native country. Luckily, he also frequently shares them on social media so the entire world can enjoy them. Check out more below.

There is something surprisingly appealing about big patches of colorful fabric joined together. Their fuzzy appearance makes you want to touch them and enjoy their softness. But while you can easily do this with rugs and wall decorations, you might want to keep your hands to yourself if you ever happen to come across textile installations by Sarah Zapata.

Zapata is a Texas native who creates intriguing textile art installations that feature high columns or various grounded shapes covered in fabric. Her works transform the space, taking the viewer on an exciting journey through the world of fabric one piece at a time.

“I’m always thinking about how to occupy opposites and how to really be both and neither,” Zapata explained her approach to installations in a recent chat with Colossal. “I’m always trying to lean into this in-between space, not only physically but thinking about that in terms of time and accessing past, futurity, existing in the present, always this amorphous sense of time.”

Zapata’s art is strongly influenced by the textile traditions from Peru, the country where her father was born. Textile has played a major part in Peruvian history, and artworks using fabric can be dated back to the Paracas people, who lived in the area around 600 BC. Textile still has an important role in Peruvian culture, being used in ceremonies or as gifts for special occasions.

You will be able to see Zapata’s works in person at some of her upcoming exhibitions in Kansas City’s Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. If you can’t make it there, check out some of her textile art below.

The works of Ghanaian artist Kpe Innocent are dedicated to human figures. However, the artist has an intriguing approach to the subject, opting to build them through geometrical shapes.

In Innocent’s paintings, humans are presented as a sum of geometrical shapes and forms. As such, they are often disproportional, with small circles as their head, huge blocks to serve as their body, and long cylinders as limbs.

Innocent paints his human figures in neutral tones and minimalistic lines. They are either shown interacting with each other or dominating the canvas with their forms.

The artist explains that his fascination with humans comes from his faith. His paintings often carry affirmative titles with attached messages of spirituality.

“I am able to appreciate the process of creation, of producing something tangible and relevant out of nothing,” says Innocent about his works.

So far, Kpe Innocent had several solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States. His works were displayed in NIL Gallery in Paris, France, The Hole in New York, United States, and Moosey Art in London, UK. The artist also frequently shares his newest paintings on social media. Artists Katerina Marchenko and Artashes Sardarian recently combined their talents to create an intriguing series of artworks that combine embroidery with Kintsugi, a Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery with gold.

The artists used broken pieces of vintage plates as the foundation for their works. Sardarian brought together the pieces using gold, with each repaired plate featuring a hole in the middle. Marchenko then used the plates as a frame to create striking embroidery images of eyes and hands, resulting in unique pieces of art.

According to the pair, their collaboration aims to show that old and overlooked things can be given a new life in an inspiring way.

“This collection is not just about vintage; it’s a metaphor for how old things, once overlooked and forgotten, can gain a new life, becoming something entirely unique and inspiring,” Marchenko shared about the project.

Marchenko is a self-taught artist from Ukraine who creates 3D embroidery images and portraits.

Sardarian, Armenia-native who currently resides in Paris, France, is a mixed media artist who works with various materials, including epoxy, clay, minerals, and more.

Most people don’t see much use for rusty nuts and bolts, pieces of metal wire, or broken shears. But for artist Brian Mock, this metal scrap is an art waiting to happen.

Mock gives discarded metal a new purpose by turning it into amazing metal sculptures. He welds together hundreds and sometimes thousands of metal pieces, both big and small, to craft animals, guitars, portraits, and more.

Despite working with such demanding material, Mock is able to recreate features of his subjects to the slightest detail. To make it all even more impressive, the Oregon native is a self-taught artist who never had any conventional training in metalwork.

“Giving old, everyday objects a new life as one sculpture is an artistically demanding, yet gratifying, process, “the artist states on his official website. “My work is designed to emphasize resourcefulness and encourage viewer engagement. Audience reactions fuel my creativity and help me bring my visions to life. “

Mock has gained a lot of attention from the art world because of his metal sculptures. His pieces have been exhibited across the world in galleries and public spaces while also being the subject of two books. Check out more of them by scrolling below.

Jim Musil is a Minnesota-based artist who paints stunning landscapes. In his works, Musil uses playful and vibrant colors to make everyday sights even more exciting and eye-catching.

Musil’s paintings radiate with a strange calmness. It is easy to get lost in their ever-changing skies, flower fields, rocky rivers, and green pastures.

Musil comes from a family of artists, making his life call somewhat expected. But even after attending art college, he pursued a career in technology, admitting that he never “had a lot of patience for painting” when he was younger.

However, he once again found a way back to art when he got older and discovered it gives him “happiness and peace of mind.”

“Nowadays, I have more wisdom, and I’ve grown to love the craft of producing a finished painting,” he explains on his website.

Musil works almost exclusively with acrylic paints as he likes to work fast and blend as little as possible. This technique allows him to be prolific, finishing one or two paintings each week.

Musil offers his paintings for sale through his website. He also regularly shares his newest artwork on his social media. You can check out more of them by continuing to scroll.

When they hear the name Ronaldo, most people nowadays immediately think of Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo. However, before C. Ronaldo broke on the scene there was another soccer player who owned that name, and for older generations, he still remains “The Real Ronaldo”.

Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima is a retired soccer player from Brazil who played between 1993 and 2011 and was considered at one point the best in the world. A group of artists decided to celebrate the legacy of the “Real Ronaldo” with a virtual exhibition of artworks dedicated to the Inter Milan and Real Madrid legend.

Curated by Instagram user A Store Like 94, the exhibition aims to showcase 30 artworks dedicated to the original Ronaldo in the span of 30 days. It also marks the 30th anniversary of Ronaldo’s professional debut with his boyhood club Cruzeiro.

“At the start of last year I came up with the crazy Idea to curate an exhibition to celebrate 30 years since R9 the real Ronaldo burst onto the football scene in 1993 with Cruzeiro,” A Store Like 94 explains. “The premise of the whole project was to reach out and track down 30 male and female artists, some old some new to help me celebrate one of the greatest number 9’s of the modern game as well as making some new friends along the way.”

Usually, the best inspiration for creative work can be found in the things that surround you. Artist Bernie Kaminski employs this principle by recreating everyday objects using paper mache.

Kaminski’s sculpture portfolio consists of bags, clothes, food, boxes, sports equipment, and everything else you would usually find in someone’s home. The artist manages to recreate the objects to great detail but leaves small imperfections as a charming addition and a reminder for the viewer that they are viewing fake products.

In a recent chat with It’s Nice That, Kaminski revealed that he started doing paper mache almost by accident. His daughter wanted him to make her a basketball out of paper mache, and the first attempt was a resounding success.

Since then, Kaminski started to make paper mache on a regular basis “just to entertain myself.”

“I can’t really draw or paint, but when I started making paper mâché pieces, I thought they looked interesting enough to keep doing it, “he shared in a recent.

Kaminski shares his creations on Instagram and already has an admirable collection of paper mache pieces posted on social media. His works have received quite a lot of praise among internet users, who can’t wait to see what he’ll come up with next.
