Zaria Forman is a New York-based artist who dedicated much of her art career to documenting climate change. She captures the beauty of vulnerable landscapes through a series of captivating pastel drawings, wanting to raise awareness about their endangerment.

Forman’s works mainly focus on polar ice caps, glaciers, icebergs, and raging waters of the Arctic Ocean. The focal point isn’t the effects that climate change had on these landscapes. The artist rather strives to show their beauty so the viewers are aware of what’s at stake.

“I draw as much precise detail as I can in order to transport the viewer to a place that is otherwise distant and abstract,” Forman shared with The New York Times. “I convey the beauty of these vulnerable landscapes, as opposed to their devastation, to inspire viewers to help protect and preserve them.”

Searching for inspiration, Forman travels to remote regions of the world to see them in person. While there, she admires the fragile beauty and collects photographs to use as a reference in her work. Some of the regions Forman visited include Antarctica, Greenland, and Arctic Canada as part of NASA’s Operation IceBridge missions.

There is something both calming and disturbing about oceans. Watching their breaking waves is peaceful, but also reminds you that the power of the sea is far greater than we can imagine.

Intrigued by the beauty and power of oceans, Canadian artist Katharine Burns creates captivating paintings of seascapes. With an impressive attention to detail, Burns reproduces all sorts of different scenes on canvas. This ranges from calming seas painted in bright colors by a setting sun to waves crashing on the beach.

According to Burns, the main focus of her paintings is always water, and she always aims to avoid adding other motifs that might distract the viewers.

“What I try to capture is intimacy, and the qualities of the whole ocean environment that captivate us, sometimes unconsciously; or inspire awe in ways we can barely put into words,” Burns explains on her website. “The sparkles created from sunlight on the water’s surface; the amazing force behind a wave; the little windows of translucency that flash within it for a split second just before it crashes to the shore.”

Burns’ seascape paintings are currently exhibited at the James Baird Gallery in Pouch Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Abbozzo Gallery in Toronto, Ontario. You can also check them out on the artist’s social media channels or by scrolling below.

Belarusian sculptor Ivan Karpitsky decided to use sub-zero temperatures in his home country to undertake a truly amazing project. Karpitsky built a boat out of ice and even took it for a sail.

In a series of Instagram posts, which quickly spread on social media, Karpitsky documented the process of building the boat as well as its first sail. And no, the boat hasn’t sunk.

In one of the videos shared on his Instagram page, Karpitsky can be seen laying down blocks of ice to create the body of the boat before sculpting it into proper shape using a chainsaw. He even built a roof for the boat and fitted it with a helm and paddle wheels for added authenticity.

The final result of Karpitsky’s project was impressive, as the ice boat looked just like the real thing. And, as another clip showed, the boat had no problem staying afloat even with passengers onboard.

Karpitsky is a well-known sculptor in his native Belarus, having built all sorts of amazing pieces out of ice and snow. This includes a castle, a tower, and a violin. Check out more photos of his icy boat, as well as some of his other creations, below.

Jon Foreman is a land artist from Wales who creates mesmerizing artworks using stones as his paint and beach as his canvas.

To create his land art, Foreman meticulously arranges hundreds of stones, making sure to align them by color, shape, and size into captivating patterns and images. Occasionally, the artist also uses other found materials like sea shells, branches, and leaves. Each piece aims to reflect his appreciation for natural beauty and pay tribute to the world that surrounds him.

Most of the time, Foreman doesn’t have a plan about how his next artwork will look like. He enters the process with an open mind, allowing the inspiration of the moment to lead him.

Creating land art isn’t just a way for Foreman to express his creativity. It also serves as a way to deal with the stress of everyday life, providing a therapeutic effect.

“Repeat processes are always very therapeutic and this is a good example of that, getting lost in the process is an important part of land art,” Foreman told Street Art News in a recent interview.

Due to weather conditions and sometimes human interference, Foreman’s land art usually doesn’t survive for long. However, the artist makes sure to capture a photo of each piece and share it with the rest of the world on his social media. Check out more of his works below.

Talented artists don’t need an extensive color palette or impeccable canvas to create great works of art. One great example is Greek artist Melpomeni Chatzipanagiotou, who uses just pen and ink to create intricate drawings on wood slices.

Despite working with limited material, Chatzipanagiotou manages to pack her wood illustrations with amazing details and captivating scenes. These pieces often explore diverse themes, which is a result of the artist’s “broad interests,” as she explains on her official website.

Chatzipanagiotou’s creative process mainly focuses on “natural habitat and its living inhabitants“ that she pairs with some surreal elements in order to give her works an otherworldly touch.” She also looks to “pay homage to Mother Nature” while exploring themes on how all life is connected. This leads to drawings of flower-covered deer under a star-filled sky, dreamlike landscapes, and tranquil scenes of cabins in the woods.

Aside from her wood slice illustrations, the artist also works on several other projects. This includes paper illustrations and drawings in a similar style. She is also working on a coloring book that will become available in 2023.

Chatzipanagiotou often shares her newest wood slice artworks on her official Instagram page, while some can also be purchased through her Etsy store. You can check out more of them below.

Did you know that flowers can dance ballet? Neither did we until we encountered the works of Dutch artist Anne ten Donkelaar.

This Utrecht School of the Art graduate recently presented an intriguing new series of works titled “Underwater Ballet”. In the series, ten Donkelaar submerges flowers in cold water in a carefully choreographed way. Each flower is tied to a metal piece to ensure it stays underwater.

The attempts to emerge on the surface and the inability to do causes the flowers to wave and creates a “silent image of a spirited dance”, as the artist puts it on her website.

The flowers don’t get trapped underwater for long, which is why ten Donkelaar makes sure to capture their dance on camera. Sometimes she even offers them as prints to those who appreciate her work.

Besides “Underwater Ballet”, ten Donkelaar also works with found flowers, twigs, and broken butterflies to create art pieces and installations. She picks up these objects during her long walks in nature and takes them to her studio. She then takes her time to find the ideas and show them in their full beauty.

“My finds inspire me. While looking at them, I can invent my own stories about their existence and their lives,” she reveals.

Check out more of her works below.

Based in the rural village of Upper Moutere, New Zealand, and surrounded by vineyards, orchards, and country gardens it comes as no surprise that Fleur Woods’s art is inspired by nature.

Her detailed stitched paintings are created using fabric, gouache, and ultimately embroidery. “Stitched Paintings is the term I use to describe my style of work,” she writes on her website. “The process flows like this: I paint blank pieces of linen in abstract washes then add botanical, illustrative details in with acrylic paint or gouache or ink, finally I add texture through stitch.”

Partly trained and partly self-taught, Woods has learnt her craft through trial and error. “Coming to stitch as a mixed media artist I have taught myself a variety of embroidery techniques which probably don’t follow traditional embroidery guides but work for the kind of mark making I enjoy creating,” she writes.

“Stitch for me has become a bit of an obsession which marries my love of detail, color, texture, and allows hours of quiet reflection and Netflix binge watching,” she concludes. Sounds ideal to us!

Take a closer look.

Marijke Buurlage’s illustrations are a feast for the eyes. Her work – vibrant, light-hearted, playful and feminine – mostly centers around animals and botanicals (two subjects she likes to draw best). So it comes as no surprise that when it comes to her inspiration – nature takes the cake.

“I think what mostly inspires me is nature,” she reflected in an interview with the Hidden Hipsters. “All the colors, patterns and shapes that you can find in nature are so amazing and beautiful!” she gushed. According to Buurlage, she often feels the need to sketch when she’s outside. These little doodles of animals and botanicals will often reappear in her illustrations as decorative elements. “My work often contains ornaments that are inspired by nature,” she stressed, “I don’t think I could create anything that is really ‘me’ without these botanical decorations.”

Based in the Netherlands, Buurlage grew up in a small village where nature was prevalent. Having graduated from Minerva Academy Groningen in 2013, she has been working as a freelance illustrator ever since, working on editorial illustrations for magazines, children’s books, book covers, posters, apps, and e-books.

“Children’s books from the fifties, sixties, and seventies really inspire me,” she notes. “I often go to second-hand stores to look through all the beautifully illustrated covers of these books for inspiration. I love the use of color and shapes in these picture books and the characters are always so adorable. My vintage children’s book collection is growing every week!”

Aside from her editorial work, Buurlage also runs an Etsy shop, where you can find illustrated goodies, such as posters, pins, and postcards. But you can also enjoy her work from afar, via Instagram.

Growing up, Reilly Case would watch her grandmother work fabric and thread like water through her hands. Inspired by her grandmother’s hands delicately manipulating the fabric like magic, she taught herself how to hand embroider little hoops of sunshine and delight – pieces she now sells on her Etsy shop.

But things weren’t as straight forward as it might seem. “In the past, I often tried to teach myself embroidery,” admitted Case on a blog post published on her website. “I’d buy the books! I’d buy the fabric! I’d buy the floss! And the hoops! And the needles! PHEW… And then I’d promptly get ‘too busy’ and put them away in the cupboard. Only to pick them up a couple of months later and start the process all over again. I’d get so excited to do something creative and then KAPUT I’d give up.”

Then, according to her, something quite extraordinary happened and she had to take some unexpected time off work because of a bout of illness. “I needed something that I could do at home,” she writes, “that would entertain me but also was calming, relaxing and creative.”

And so, inspired by her grandmother, she took – once again – to embroidery. “Embroidery became this mindful experience for me,” says Case. “Something that made me feel uplifted but at ease. I’d become so connected to screens, to work, to getting it all done; embroidery was able to be the antithesis of that.”

Now she shares this passion with others, creating modern hoop art and one of a kind jewelry pieces which you can also admire through her Instagram page.

Tania Lissova, a paper artist from Russia, found a unique and beautiful way to express her creativity. She makes tiny paper plants and flower bouquets using small pieces of paper that she carefully cuts and shapes, then glues together into wonderful little paper sculptures. Lissova was an architecture and art student when she explored other artists’ work trying to find inspiration for her own work. She finally found paper art to be something she enjoys the most and she turned it from a hobby into a full-time job over time.

During a Q&A session on her Instagram page, a follower asked Lissova about the secret of her continuous creativity. She replied: “There’s no secret. I just love what I do. It motivates me to keep creating.”
