With a strong belief that their creativity can help communicate important issues, the two graphic designers have also been involved in many educational projects. “It is exciting to research, collaborate, and to create programs that are challenging and that make the audience think,” said Cecile in an interview with The Association of Illustrators.

“Every time we meet a new group of students or professionals we have to analyze how we are doing things,” she adds. “What are our procedures? What is creativity? How do we run our studio? How do we get ideas across? Going through all these questions regularly helps us to make potential changes within our practice as well as discuss with others how they work. I always learn as much as I teach.”

Fully immersed in her artistic lifestyle, her creations are celebrated both online and offline, with more than 30k fans on Instagram and exhibitions around the world as well as murals in cities like Detroit, New York, Chicago, Canada, and France. But like most creative spirits, it took her some time to embrace her calling.

“Honestly, I always wanted to be an artist but it somehow felt like an impossible dream,” she admits. It wasn’t until she worked at a big agency (“a windowless cubicle”) designing what seemed like pointless ads, that she realized she would rather fail at being an artist than succeed in advertising.

“I wanted to quit right then and there but instead worked tirelessly during every hour spent outside of that cubical until I was able to support myself independently,” she says. Luckily for us, she eventually took the required leap of faith. Watch as her art slowly, but surely takes over the world.

“I’m not a graphic designer, illustrator, architect or a sculptor, but maybe I’m all of those things,” she told Elephant. “It’s about mindset and trying to create something for people to feel they are part of. My mantra is the Chinese proverb ‘Make happy those that are near and those that are far will come.’”

Mostly working based on commissions, she says she prefers having big projects – the bigger and bolder, the better. “But, I wouldn’t want to do it all the time: it’s manual work,” she adds. “I don’t like repeating things. I do repeat symbols and motifs in my work but I don’t like the idea of repeating projects. I am obsessed with the paint being really flat and the color to be really deep and the edges being really perfect. People ask why I don’t use vinyl, it’s just that I like doing mechanical things by hand.”

Influenced by the simple happiness found in everyday life, FWY started as an art experiment, creating soft sculptures as a means of spreading more accessible art. But what began as an experiment has long outgrown its humble beginnings.

“Our work is not only about positivity,” said Borkson in an interview with Fader. “It’s about facing the darkness with no fear and the entire spectrum of the human experience. Our work is a reflection of what we want for ourselves and then people have the choice to see it as they like.”

The result is something out of a childhood dream, that combines installations with paintings and sculptures. Her work has been exhibited all around the world, including in Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Germany. “I’m interested in imagined worlds, places that only exist in stories or in our imagination,” said Schultz in an interview with Hot ‘N’ Gold magazine. “But I also find traveling super inspirational – going to new places, discovering traditional crafts, flea-markets, visual details, new people and their stories.”

“I’ve always been interested in color relationships – how colors react next to each other,” she added. “My work seems to have gotten more and more intensely colorful over time – vibrant and fluorescent colors that are quite psychedelic. Sometimes I step back and think… oh dear, what have I done!? So much color it could make you fall over.”
