Through her surreal sculptures, Canadian artist Ellen Jewett takes the special bond between animals and plants to an even deeper level. Instead of being interdependent on each other like in the real world, they actually become one in the world created by her art.

Jewett’s sculptures combine the features of animals and plants in a way that makes them look like they came straight out of a fantasy movie. There are turtles with trees growing on their back, deer with branches and twigs instead of horns, and wolves covered with flowers as part of their fur.

Jewett mostly creates smaller sculptures that fit in the palm of one’s hand. But despite this, she manages to pack each piece with an astonishing amount of details. In order to do so, she relies on her formal studies in fine art, anthropology, and zoology, as well as work experience in medical illustration and exotic animal care.

“Plants and animals have always been the surface on which humans have etched the foundations of culture, sustenance, and identity. For myself, natural forms are a continual source of fascination and deep aesthetic pleasure,” Jewett explains on her website.

At first glance, the works of New Zealand-born artist Jeremy Geddes look like stills from a disaster movie or a surreal work from a talented digital artist. But they are neither. Instead, they are a result of painstaking attention to detail and a testament to a great artistic talent.

Geddes creates astonishing oil paintings that deliver surreal scenes to viewers in photorealistic quality. Each brushstroke is purposeful and placed to bridge the gap between art and reality, but the things that appear on the canvas seem hardly possible: astronauts melting or disintegrating in unknown dimensions, spacecraft crashing into buildings, cars balancing on their tips, and much more.

The scenes featured in Geddes’ paintings are hard to explain and pose more questions than they answer. This is exactly what the artist wants.

“With these paintings, I’m trying to leave the narrative ambiguous and open to interpretation, whilst juxtaposing enough disparate elements to make some sort of interpretation necessary. I’m keen to never give enough clues to block any potential explanation the viewer might bring. I want to spark questions, rather than answer them,” said Geddes ahead of the recent Thinkspace Projects exhibition.

Wildlife takes center stage in the works of New York-based artist Gigi Chen, but not in the way we are accustomed. Chen creates hyper-realistic depictions of wildlife while putting them in surreal scenarios that intrigue the viewer’s imagination.

Chen’s paintings prominently feature birds as main subjects, influenced by the artist’s love for nature and fascination with birds. Additionally, the birds represent “symbols of her personal stories.”

“Nature is pure magic, and I create work channeling that wonder, notably casting birds as the main characters who tell my stories,” she explained in a recent chat with Canvas Rebel. “Birds to me are so fascinating. They are a huge species in which every type of bird looks different and each performs their own way of life.”

Chen started her artistic journey more than two decades ago, working as an assistant to fine artists after leaving college and abandoning her goal of becoming an animator. The experience helped her master the demanding Old Master techniques and get familiar with working on large-scale art projects. Soon, she started creating fine art herself and it didn’t took long for the quality and captivating elements of her paintings to capture the attention of reputable art galleries and art enthusiasts.

You can check some of Chen’s paintings by scrolling below.

In the world of art, there are many paths to explore. Some artists create dreamy landscapes, while others embrace romantic styles. Among these options is surrealism, and one artist stands out in that particular realm: Austin Howlett, who has almost 77,000 followers on Instagram and has been gaining quite a following.

As you scroll through his Instagram page, it’s easy to see why he’s getting so popular. First and foremost, his painting skills are top-notch. His talent is apparent, and it’s also clear that this is someone who has put in tireless hours to become a master of his craft.

But there’s more to Howlett than just technical skills. He has a unique style that sets him apart. His surreal paintings often depict giants in mountainous landscapes or people merged with trees. If these descriptions don’t make sense to you, they’re not supposed to. The beauty of surreal art is that it doesn’t always make sense.

You have to look at the art yourself to appreciate the structure within the chaos, and if you take a look at Howlett’s page, you may just witness the magic. Before you know it, you might find that you “get” what Howlett is trying to say.

Though predominantly abstract, Angela Heisch’s paintings seem to be in dialogue with nature. This quality is very much intentional. In fact, according to Heisch, her work stems from her constant investigation of the natural world. Using repetition and patterns, Heisch aims to replicate balanced organic compositions found in nature. The end result is both familiar and unfamiliar—an uncharted territory one is invited to explore.

“I’ve always been inspired by patterns in nature, natural phenomena, and things that feel much bigger than ourselves, while also feeling familiar,” reflected Heisch in a recent interview with Whitewall. And yet, being abstract, her paintings also have a sense of openness to them.

“I’ve been thinking more about fantasy, really striving for less rigidity in my work,” says Heisch. “I’m thinking about space, actual imagery of outer space, but more so I’m thinking about the forms in my paintings existing in a space that isn’t grounded or rooted in architecture.”

These spaces can reflect both the outside world and our personal interpretations of it – a psychological landscape of sorts that reminds of surrealist paintings from the early 20th century. “I’m thinking of this newer work as exhibiting forms grown in nature, the balance and chaos that entails, and having lots of fun exploring all the possibilities of that imagery,” says Heisch.

Her sense of exploration and experimentation can also be traced to her creative process. “I start with a series of thumbnails, to get a few possible scenarios for a painting,” explains Heisch. “From there, I most often make a pastel based on one of the thumbnails. The pastels are great to work out color, and maybe to edit composition.” She adds that while she tries to match colors accurately to the pastel during the first few layers of underpainting, she usually stops paying such close attention to the pastel reference as the painting progresses.

Born in New Zealand, Heischwas raised in Buffalo, New York, and attended SUNY Potsdam, where she received her Bachelors in Fine Arts in 2011. She then went on to attend the University at Albany, where she received her Masters in Fine Arts in 2014. Now based in in Brooklyn, New York, her selected solo exhibitions include Trapeze, Davidson Gallery, Heed, Transmitter Gallery (both in NY), and Like Molasses, No Place Gallery, Columbus, OH.

Gab Bois lives in Montreal, Canada, where she works on her surreal photography projects that show some bizarre, although clever, concepts. Her images often feature some interesting but impossible ideas, such as making a coffee cup out of sugar cubes and actually pouring coffee in it.

Bois isn’t too concerned about fine-tuning her photos to achieve certain visual effects. For him, photography is just a tool for translating the ideas she wants to share with the world. She got a degree in fine art but she only started practicing photography after she graduated. She mostly finds inspiration in ordinary, mundane things that make up everyday life but always adds a twist that makes her work recognizable.

You can find her photos on Instagram and see them in exhibitions around the globe. She’s currently preparing a solo exhibition for 2020, but her work will also be featured in group exhibitions in London and Montreal this October.
