Zaria Forman is a pastel artist who loves drawing glaciers. She often travels around the world and joins scientific expeditions where she has the chance to experience glaciers firsthand and to take many reference photos. When she comes home to Brooklyn, she turns her experiences into incredibly realistic pastel drawings.

I’m partnering with @airbnb as they work with @oceanconservancy on an expedition to Antarctica that seeks to understand the potential environmental effects of microplastics reaching the Antarctic interior. She draws using both her memory and the photos she took for reference. “Occasionally I will re-shape the ice a little, or simplify a busy background to create a balanced composition, but 90% of the time I am depicting the exact scene that I witnessed, because I want to stay true to the landscape that existed at that point in time,” the artist told This is Colossal.

Climate change is one of the biggest problems society faces today. Forman, just like many other artists, uses her talent to draw attention to it and to motivate people to do whatever they can in order to prevent it. Scroll down to see her works.

Greenland lost 12.5 billion tons of ice to melting on August 2, the largest single-day loss in recorded history and another stark reminder of the climate crisis. Antarctica is shedding ice 3x faster than it was a decade ago. My drawings are love letters to the ice. They are portraits of this accelerated loss, and a clarion call for faster action against that loss. And this one looks like a heart to me It will hang in “Change”, a permanent exhibition that I’m curating aboard the @natgeo Endurance. @lindbladexp #curatechange

I had a great interview with @oprahmagazine this morning! One thing we discussed was the paper I use (Lenox 100 by @legionpaper). It’s much smoother than papers that are normally recommended for pastel. More tooth and texture absorbs more pigment. I prefer the smoother surface of Lenox, because I find the texture gets in the way of the finer details (like the icy bits in this detail of my drawing of sea ice in the Lincoln Sea!). The challenge is that it doesn’t leave a lot of room for error or re-working since the paper can only handle a small amount of pigment. The upside is the paper tells me when it’s done, so I can’t agonize and re-work areas ad nauseam
