Artist From Moscow Creates Surreal Paintings

Julia Petrova is a Russian artist whose work is unique and mesmerizing. Her paintings represent people, places, and landscapes in an unusual way, showing them in utopian/dystopian scenarios.

Her work has a retro feel and reminds us of old sci-fi movies and shows. We can see the connection to the legendary design studio Hipgnosis, which was responsible for the art for bands including Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd.

“While it’s tempting, I don’t think I’m present in my illustrations as any of the characters,” Petrova tells Creative Boom. “In these worlds they navigate, I’m more of an invisible entity always standing next to them and giving them a sense of understanding even in the most unexpected situations. By characters, I don’t only mean human, or even animate, ones.”

She mostly uses watercolor and combines it with ink and liner pens for depth. Her art is textured and the scenes are full of detail, which is why you won’t be able to look away from it.
