Jena Holliday’s illustrations are very much a reflection—no, a continuation—of her identity as a woman and a mother. Describing herself as an illustrator, author, and a “creative mama from Minnesota”, her work is centered around women, serving as an empowering tool for her thousands of followers (to date, her Instagram page sports an impressive 35k fanbase).

“My work is inspired by growing up surrounded by women (4 sisters!) and finding that the beauty of our differences always made us stronger,” she writes on her personal website. Other sources of inspiration include diversity, honest motherhood, and her walk of faith (in fact, tying in with her faith, her studio/brand is named Spoonful of Faith).

According to Holliday, her creative spirit blossomed at an early age, but having grown up she put her love of art aside, launching first a career in marketing. “I have always been creative,” she shared in an interview with Creative Lady Collective. “From a young age, I would sketch comic strips and draw people I did life with. I never took it too seriously until after I finished college with a degree in marketing.”

But returning to her original passion was only a matter of time. For Holliday, it was motherhood that reignited her interest in art and illustration. “I decided that I wasn’t really doing what I loved to do, and then after the birth of my first child, I got an insane passion to go for what I always dreamed of,” she recalls.

Like in most cases, the internet happened. Sharing her work online drew other people in, and Holliday was commissioned to do the things she loved doing best. But the actual leap of faith into freelance work happened a while later—when she was pregnant with her second child.

“From there I’ve seen the need in the market for women, especially mothers, to be encouraged in being creative,” she notes. “I’ve also seen artists struggle with marketing and ‘selling’ their work and through my past experience and passion for art—I started teaching tips and tricks to women through Mother Creative, an online community I launched”.

These days, her clients include giants like Dove, HarperCollins, and Logitech. But her biggest audience has always remained the same: other women.

Marine Bl Girard is a talented French artist living and working in Paris. She started her career when she was a little girl, and was only four years old when she began drawing together with her grandmother. Later, she went to art school to eventually become a Graphic Designer.

To create her masterpieces, Girard explains how her creating process needs to look.

“I’m very organized. I like when everything is well planned, and precision is also really important to me,” she said in an interview for Ballpit. “Maybe that’s the reason why I really like geometric design, sharp shapes, vectors, and symmetry. It looks very clean and organized, and I think it creates a sort of harmony (at least to me!).”

After graduation, she moved to the “City of Light” and loves her creative job. Lately, she has been drawing more in Procreate, regardless of Illustrator being her favorite medium. Images of plates full of colorful and delicious-looking food, flowers, animals, and people are just some of the works she shares on her Instagram and Behance account.

Check out the gallery below if you want to see her beautiful illustrations. Don’t forget to support her work by following her on social media.

Blurring the line between artist and therapist, Adam J. Kurtz, is our favorite person on Instagram these days. Describing himself as hopeful but realistic, Kurtz is interested in the ephemera of daily life, a nice little thing that makes you feel better for some reason, and creating honest, accessible work.

A designer-author-illustrator-creative director-writer-small press-brand, Kurtz’s brand, rooted in honesty, humor, and a little darkness. One of our favorite creations by him is a book dedicated to life advice for creatives. Describing it as the most sincere work he’s ever done, the book is a fully handwritten essay collection that touches on what it really means to be a creative person, and all the energy and fear and internal jumble that comes with that.

But his advice can also be relevant to non-artistic folk as well. “Creativity is a huge, giant word,” he remarked once in an interview with the Creative Independent. “I don’t think creativity is inherently good. I don’t think it’s inherently anything. Actually, I’m not even sure if creativity is the drive to make things, or if it’s the mechanism that allows us to make things. It’s so big, and the word means so many different things to different people.”

“People say that to me all the time. ‘I wish I was creative,'” he notes. “Everyone is creative. Creativity is not a magical skill that you have or don’t have. I think creativity is one of the big, vague things that we all have that manifests itself in very different ways.”

i’m very happy to support @trophybar with a t-shirt and print at @merchaid for a limited time. sales will support trophy bar: a fun, casual, inclusive, safe, QPOC-owned bar (with great burgers!!!!) that has always felt like home through years of birthdays and gatherings and nights out. i remember going my first summer in nyc, being surprised by mitchell with a giant stack of birthday donuts, or the huge cannoli cake full of smaller cannolis, drunk in the bathroom with sarah jean listening to a happy birthday voicemail from my favorite musician like wtf is happening right now, having a long life talk in the dark front corner, grabbing food with chris to talk about moving into a studio, sitting in a booth planning my first book after getting locked out of my apartment on a a particularly weird day… there are just so many memories for me here and i know we all have that place or have been looking for it. this is my paper valentine to a small place that makes this big place feel like home. i miss pre-COVID nyc but i also miss being 23 and easy to please with a $5 beer and shot combo and i miss smoking cigarettes and i miss feeling like anything is possible even though of course it still is. i miss a version of me that never existed and a version of me that i might still be sometime. people who create space for others are human angels. thank you farika and trophy bar for everything.

According to Kurtz he tries to remind people that creativity isn’t just writing or drawing, and it’s not just for artists. It also doesn’t have to be labeled anything. “Really, everything I’ve ever done has come from this place of me helping myself, and then letting other people into it,” he notes.

You’ll want his positive spirit in your feed and life.

Alexandra Elle is committed to self-healing, a worthy goal she hopes to pass on to her many (many!) followers. With more than 650k followers on Instagram alone, her mission is to build a community around self-care practices through literature and language.

It all starts with a simple note – a reminder that you are worth it. Sharing quotes and mantras that are scribbled on tiny notes, she explores the way journaling can help you understand yourself better. She also teaches workshops and retreats centered around assisting others in finding their voices through storytelling, poetry, and narrative writing.

“A lot of people believe that self-care has to be expensive and lavish, but it doesn’t,” she told Hello Giggles. “It can mean something as simple as making sure that you take five minutes to decompress every day. Take time to breathe. We are moving so quickly that sometimes we don’t even realize we’re breathing! Remember to be here and be present—that’s a non-negotiable for me. It really is amazing what taking five minutes—or whatever you can spare—just to be present can do for the rest of your day.”

“For me, self-care teaches that I can pour into myself just as much as I pour into others,” Elle explains. “In fact, it means that in order to put the most love and care towards others that I can, I must take care of myself first.” Start the new decade on the right foot:

Whew! This was a big lesson for me in the 2010s. It was more than a challenge. For a good two years I kept trying to grow AND hold on to folks that weren’t. I kept trying to bring people with me who weren’t ready to change. I was scared to evolve alone—but that’s what I needed. . . I found who I was in some pretty gloomy moments. And when I emerged, I was ready to meet likeminded folks, my now husband came into my life, and my life’s work started to come to fruition. My chosen family and sister-friends (also) started to form. And, best of all, I discovered what it meant to STAND deeply in self-trust. . . I learned what it meant to let people go lovingly, and that loving them from a distance was alright. I learned that being alone isn’t always synonymous with being lonely. I learned that what I wanted mattered and to value myself on a deeper level. . . I’m ready to see what the next 10 years will teach me. I feel blessed to be here — on the other side of pain. Finding my joy in the 2010s was life changing. . . Community: What did the last 10 years teach you? Is there a lesson that really stood out? . . My virtual course starts on 1/5. The registration cart is open until 1/1. Quite a few have been gifting the course for the holidays and it’s pretty epic to see! We also have a global community which is wild and amazing to me. Sign up to join us at the link in my bio.

Yelena Bryksenkova’s illustrations exude comfort. With interior landscapes front and center throughout her work, her art will inspire you to make peace with your home and yourself. “There is a recurring theme to my work,” explained Bryksenkova in an interview with Frankie, “usually scenes of domesticity and comfort. I love the variety of subjects that my professional clients bring to me, but for personal work I always go back to the same quiet scenes,” she admits.

Painted with Holbein Acryla gouache, her illustrations present everyday objects alongside more magical and mysterious settings. To get her creative juices flowing, Bryksenkova reads and spends ample time around art and nature. She also does what Virginia Woolf called “street haunting”. By the time she’s back at her desk, she’s excited to get started.

“I like to research a new project and prepare by collecting images on Pinterest or flipping through my reference books,” she adds, explaining the creative process itself. “Once I have some ideas, I sketch thumbnails to determine composition and then move on to a larger, more detailed sketch. I use a light box to lightly trace the sketch onto watercolor paper and then move on the final painting.”

“My gradual change in medium has affected my style more than anything else,” she notes. “Also, whereas my early work always defaulted to mostly blue tones, I’ve learned to incorporate a broader range of colors and create more interesting combinations by consciously limiting my palettes to just two or three hues.”

Take a look at some of her soothing depictions of home life in the gallery below:

We first caught notice of illustrator Karolina Zolubak when we stumbled upon her “Preggo-Journals” – a candid illustrated journal she shared on Instagram, documenting the challenges of becoming a mother. But having learned since about Zolubak’s journey to becoming a full-time illustrator, we’re even more impressed.

Based in Berlin, Zolubak moved out from home at the mere age of 17 and started to study and work as a translator. But having gained a Master of Arts in communication and cultural studies, she found herself drawn back to the drawing table. “I’m a spiritual person who believes in the power of thoughts and wishes,” she shared in an interview with Strangerless. “I make a ritual of it every now and then to send out a wish to the universe.”

And so, come New Year’s Eve (almost three years ago to date), she sat down and looked deep within herself. “I wrote down: I want to develop professionally and leave my boredom behind me, I want to illustrate, to learn to draw and edit digitally, I want to create a portfolio of my drawings and (at some point) illustrate articles for magazines,” she recalled.”Also, I want to see something of my own in Flow magazine.

Incredibly enough, and with a lot of hard work and dedication, her wishes came true. Nowadays, her work includes anything from editorial illustrations to personalized and individual illustrations. Here are some highlights from her feed:

*Kali or Goddess Mother* How many roles do I play in my life? Meredith had it right…I‘m a mother, an entrepreneur, I‘m a wife, a friend, an author, an illustrator…sometimes it’s just overwhelming. I‘m juggling all of it at once, afraid to let any role fall down even for a while, but it’s simply impossible to give 100% to each role! It‘s 100% for all of them together, so if I choose to work more, my baby and my relationship get less; if I choose to go out with friends, I might need to pump and dump and call my publishers to postpone the next deadline. It‘s a wild act, overwhelming, exhausting but also exciting. I am trying to find a balance I can live with, kicking my perfectionism in the butt, asking for help and for forgiveness, trying not to loose my head. It’s my hell, it’s my dream, it’s nothing in between and I know I wouldn’t want it any other way!* . *free Interpretation of Meredith Brooks’ „I‘m a bitch“ . . . . . #motherhood #motherhoodillustrated #morerealityoninstagram #lifewithababy #momboss #preggojournal #creativetherapy #workingmother #bookauthor #illustrator #goddess #mothergoddess #artonlink #illustrationartists #womenwhodraw #motherhoodunited #fürmehrrealitätaufinstagram #mimimom #goddesskali #roles #illustratedlife #berlinillustration #momblogger #zoluart #womensupportingwomen #newauthor #bookrelease #newmother #alanismorissette

Jodi Levine will inspire you to roll up your sleeves and get crafting. “Love using items from the supermarket and recycle bin!” reads her Instagram caption (indeed, most of her arts and crafts projects require little to no money). A mother of two and a lifelong crafter, Levine studied painting formerly in RISD before returning to her original passion. “When I look back at my time in art school, I loved every minute of it but I also felt a little lost in that I didn’t fit into any one department,” she later admitted in an interview with David Stark.

“The world has changed so much since I was in school and the word ‘craft’ was perceived very negatively,” she added. “The whole design/DIY/craft world has exploded which is great for those of us that like to make stuff and dabble with lots of media and don’t fit neatly into the art school categories.” It was also great for Levine, having landed the perfect job in the Craft Department at Martha Stewart Living, where she worked for over 19 years.

Now based in Brooklyn with her husband Fred and two sons, Sammy and Lionel, she continues pursuing her passion, transforming everyday items into inspiring ideas. “I look back on what was distracting me from my fine art work and it was what I have ended up doing professionally,” she notes. “But I am so grateful for my fine arts education. It gave me the creative tools needed in any area of design like color, composition and an appreciation for the natural world.”

Now, she passes on her knowledge to others, featuring regularly in programs like The Today Show, MARTHA, NY1, CBS Morning Show, and The View. You can also follow her tips and trick via Instagram. Keep your hands busy!

Singapore-based illustrator Teresa Lim puts a contemporary spin on the traditional craft of embroidery. “I majored in textile design when I was in university,” she shared with Create Magazine. “We had to go through a short course in basic embroidery, and that was the start of my embroidery journey. I started by working on samplers that were part of the course work, but I got so addicted to the process that I found myself hoping the course would never end!”

Having graduated from Lasalle College of the Arts, majoring in Fashion Textile Design, Lim has been working on anything textile related ever since. Her intricate embroidery works have been commissioned by brands as big as Gucci, Changi Airport, and Swarovski to name a few; and she’s also showcased her work in various countries and in publications both locally and internationally.

“Because of my background and training in textile and fashion design, I am always thinking of application onto women’s (I majored in womenswear) bodies,” she notes. “Being exposed to this made me think more frequently about the female body and how we view it in society. This, in turn, also led me to ponder a lot more on gender issues, body issues, stereotypes and archetypes of women. At the end of my degree, I found myself being not so interested in the superficiality of design but in using it as a medium to highlight issues and tell stories.”

Her work is mostly inspired by the people and things around her, including literature and music. Lim is also a trained classical violinist who has studied music for almost all her life. To her, music and visual art work hand in hand, with each informing the other. Here are some highlights from her Instagram page:
