Berlin-based tattoo artist Daisy Watson is known for her black pen illustration style, creating minimal art pieces that are adorned on the skin. Inspired by modern artists like Picasso, Matisse, and Jean Cocteau, her illustrations are part real, part surreal. “I taught myself how to draw and I feel that content is reflected in the different and more varied style of tattoos I produce,” she explained in an interview with All Day’s blog.

“I mainly draw my inspiration from my own experiences, beliefs, and development throughout my career,” she adds. “The objects I chose to draw are everyday objects but with a slight stylistic or simplistic differences, making them eternal in a way as they never really go ‘out of fashion’ or become unpopular.”

Indeed, her work makes for an interesting fashion statement, drawing quite a massive fanbase (on Instagram alone she has amassed more than 210k followers). But when it comes to her career path, her road was a meandering one – having first gained attention on Tumblr, where she would post photos of her illustrations and tattoos.

“From the positive feedback it got from everyone I started taking appointments and working from my home and studio spaces,” she recalled. “There’s a certain normalized order within the tattoo industry where you gotta first do an apprenticeship, learn all the different styles and then you get the chair and get to develop your own individual style. But this was different to me as I didn’t do an apprenticeship so my style simply developed from the beginning through my own inspiration, meaning rather than everyone walking around with the same designs, people get new and interesting designs, rather than just going to a standard studio, picking a design from the portfolio and ending up leaving with the ‘H & M of tattoos.’”

When it comes to stick-n-poke tattoos, Tatiana Kartomten, aka Tati Compton, is nothing short of a celebrity. With more than 260k followers on Instagram, she only takes bookings a month in advance, working out of Saved Tattoo in LA’s Arts District. But even with so much going on for her, Kartomten admits that she’s not in it for the fame.

“I’ve never wanted recognition,” she remarked once, in an interview with Amadeus, “which is why tattooing is great because it’s for someone else.” Born in Marin and raised in San Mateo, Kartomten now lives in Echo Park. She began experimenting with “home-made” tattoo art in her early twenties, and after spending a few years hand-poking at Sang Bleu London, she moved to Los Angeles where she continues to pioneer in making stick and poke tattoos a respected art form.

According to Kartomten, she gave and received her first tattoo when she and her friend hand-poked each other’s fingers. “I started with friends at home in San Francisco,” she recalled. “We wanted to do it then and there, and I had sewing needles and India ink. I became a professional over a long period of time.”

A self-taught tattoo artist through and through, she notes that most of her early clients had never heard of her chosen technique – an ancient form of body art that involves using a sharp point and some ink – but they gave her a chance and liked the results. “I always liked that it’s a lowbrow art form,” she says.

Johanna Olk’s fine line illustrations strike a chord – a sort of melancholy reflection on everyday life. With womanhood being a constant theme throughout her work, Olk’s women seem to be shrouded in thought, yet staring straight ahead. But though her illustration themes are consistent, her creative methods differ and include (aside from illustrating) painting on canvas, as well as tattooing on skin.

“A paper or a canvas or a skin, are the same, it’s just different material,” she reflected in an interview with Cortex. “I did my first tattoo on myself in high school with a needle and some random ink because I was in love with a stupid guy. Then I went to Nantes and met the best people, I was at school with Ivan he had a super scary tattoo machine, it took me a while before I tried, but once I started I followed him.”

Nowadays, she’s back to hand-poked tattooing, which doesn’t require a machine. The result is a lot more tangible – creating perfect imperfections, which is just the way she likes her art to be. With a background industrial design, Olk says she’s developed an interest in the more simple things in life, which are still able to evoke emotion. “I am very attracted to pop art, mid XXth century graphics and the Renaissance period,” she says. “It’s a long and slow journey, I am still researching and trying new techniques.”

Annita Maslov is an Australian-based artist who recently gained a lot of exposure thanks to both her illustrations and work as a tattoo artist. Her tattoos are gaining particular attention thanks to Maslov’s nature-inspired art that is done in gothic style with the overwhelming use of black ink.

Maslov spent a good portion of her career as a freelance illustrator, doing a healthy amount of commissioned tattoo designs. This inspired her to transition to tattooing, and it ended up being a great decision.

She is now working in Melbourne’s Heretic Tattoo Studio, where clients line up just to have a piece of her art on their skin.

If you are looking to get inspiration for your next tattoo, then the works of Havva (Eva) Karabudak might just be the thing for you. This Turkish-born tattoo artist creates beautiful and highly detailed scenes and landscapes captured in perfect circles that she then inks on her clients’ bodies.

Karabudak, who splits her residence between Brooklyn and Los Angeles, previously worked as an art teacher and street artist before deciding to give tattooing a chance. It turned out that she is natural at it, and she has been working as a tattoo artist for the past nine years.

While she does all sorts of tattoos, Karabudak became known for her circled tattoos. In small circles, she is able to capture an impressive number of details, creating incredibly deep and unique tattoo art. Besides landscapes and nature scenes, this talented artist also does recreations of classical paintings and popular illustrations.
