]]>This Utrecht School of the Art graduate recently presented an intriguing new series of works titled “Underwater Ballet”. In the series, ten Donkelaar submerges flowers in cold water in a carefully choreographed way. Each flower is tied to a metal piece to ensure it stays underwater.
The attempts to emerge on the surface and the inability to do causes the flowers to wave and creates a “silent image of a spirited dance”, as the artist puts it on her website.
The flowers don’t get trapped underwater for long, which is why ten Donkelaar makes sure to capture their dance on camera. Sometimes she even offers them as prints to those who appreciate her work.
Besides “Underwater Ballet”, ten Donkelaar also works with found flowers, twigs, and broken butterflies to create art pieces and installations. She picks up these objects during her long walks in nature and takes them to her studio. She then takes her time to find the ideas and show them in their full beauty.
“My finds inspire me. While looking at them, I can invent my own stories about their existence and their lives,” she reveals.

]]>Amongst her more unique creation are botanical hoops featuring plants and flowers. Printed on textile and framed in a wooden hoop these watercolorΒ illustrations promise to bring a soft and natural touch to your home. “We at Olislagers have a passion for art and are inspired by nature,” reads her website. “Plants bring a room to life in a wayΒ that nothing else can. But letβs be honest, these living creatures need space, light, water and lots of love.Β With this new collection, we offer everyone the possibility to create an urban jungle however big or small.”
With most of her illustrations centered around the natural world, Olislagers is clearly drawn to the outdoors. Nature also provides her with endless inspiration. “With the coming and going of seasons, there is always something to discover,” she writes. “Whether it’s small like a flower in bloom or big as the ever-changing lights and colors in the sky, all you have to do is take a step back, really look around you and find that there is beauty everywhere.”

]]>And so, the freshly pressed project was born: an incredible collection of wildflower specimens which Buck shares on her website and Instagram page. In 2019, Buck brought the freshly pressed project back with her to Minnesota, where she continues to collect, press, and add to her herbarium collection. “It has been an adventure in rediscovering the species from my childhood, which I now view with a new appreciation,” she writes.
“The freshly pressed blog is my way of connecting with others and hopefully inspiring them to further explore the melding of art and nature,” she adds. Having pursued degrees in biology, fine arts, and environmental studies, Buck is fascinated by botanical history – how we as humans have applied meaning and value to different plant species as a way to connect to our surroundings and how we can tap into this history as a motivation to preserve and protect our biodiversity nowadays.
“I believe that designers and scientists can both benefit from exploring across fields,” she says, “my blog brings various projects and musings to press to motivate both professions (as well as those of us who fall in the middle) to approach their work with a fresh perspective and renewed sense of wonder.”
Her website also includes a short guide on how to collect and press flowers. “Plants are easiest to identify when flowering and press best when they have fresh blooms,” she explains. “Keep an eye out for plants that are close to blooming, and collect a sample as soon as the flowers open.”

]]>“I enjoy having a handmade element into my work,” she told Jung Katz, “for example incorporating stitch into digital prints and binding my notebooks using my sewing machine, it makes it a little bit more me. My illustrations of women on the beach got a lot of interest from women themselves, and a lot of them enjoyed them simply because they show βreal womenβ, I like to think I create work that people can relate to.”
Her style is best described as loose line work, and loose watercolor illustrations. According to Hall, she nearly always uses the first illustration she creates for her final patterns, rather than over developing it, which she thinks relates nicely to the unprocessed natural world.
As Hall’s love for nature bloomed, so has her interest in its preservation. The majority of her products are packaged in 100% biodegradable and compostable clear corn starch “plastic” bags, and all of her paper goods have been made either using recycled materials, or are FSC approved.
But though her work is centered around the natural world, her inspiration comes from its inhabitants. “I am a keen observer so people watching is how I get most of my inspiration,” she says. “People surprise me everyday so a lot of the time peoplesβ actions, conversations and their dress sense also inspire me. I also take inspiration from nature, the seaside and fashion.”
