]]> Aaron Elvis Jupin’s art is very much his own. A blend of realistic and surrealistic imagery, it often features cartoonish characters with references to childhood classics. Other themes include windows and mirrors, creating a landscape that is composed of memories and reflections. There’s also a heavy dose of humor in his work, a sort of tongue in cheekiness that makes for an ironic effect.

Based in California, Jupin is mostly known for his paintings but also sculpts and draws. In March 2017, he published his first book by Stolen Books titled “DOUBLE CHECK YOU’RE ALONE”.

With his paintings, an element of play is introduced through optical illusions: “I usually have an idea that I’ll mock-up in photoshop using an assortment of references,” Jupin explained in an interview with Juxtapoz, where he shared his creative process. “But typically, I leave room for chance,” he admits. “I like to give myself options in the direction my painting can go. I think some of the best paintings I’ve made come from those opportunities.”

But though immersed in irony, Jupin aspires to be as truthful as he can with his art. “I’ve been trying to be more honest with myself as a painter and making paintings that interest me,” he notes. “The humor comes from the viewer’s own subconscious connection to these images, and I’m not trying to force this humor on anyone.”

According to Jupine, exploring the anti-real within the logic of cartoons is when the paintings become absurd. “It’s at this moment that I feel levity become present, the paintings explore animation and absurdist reality comes along with it,” he says. Indeed, painting through a nostalgic lens allows him to communicate the absurdity of how images from Disney cartoons are remembered from childhood.

“There is no rhyme or reason to my process, no schedule in how I made these recent works,” says Jupin. “Some days I feel like drawing and other days I feel like painting.” Follow his creative journey on social media.

]]> There’s a reason why illustrator, author, cartoonist, and designer Marloes De Vrie has such a massive following online (her Instagram page alone amassed some 125k devoted fans). Her comics style of illustration (humorous, playful, and colorful) is oftentimes very much on point. “Life is too short to search for matching socks,” remarks one of her characters (designed to look like De Vrie herself), while another solemnly states: “I finally understand I have just one body.”

Working as a freelance illustrator and writer, most of De Vries’ time is spent on creating illustrations for magazines, publishers and businesses. Since 2016, De Vries makes a monthly cartoon for the union magazine NT Magazine, and writes articles about self-development for Charlie Magazine and Flow, and in 2018, she was asked to develop a new weekly comic strip for the girls’ magazine Tina.

So it comes as no surprise that she took to illustration early on. As a little girl, she’d make robots out of shoe boxes and toilet rolls and would grab every piece of paper available in the house so she could draw; and by the age 18, she was accepted to the ArtEZ School of Arts in Enschede, where she studied visual communication.

Every early January of a new year, or sometimes by the end of December, I write down what the past year has brought me. Because I tend to forget. Sometimes I will remember the not so good stuff, and forgetting my best stuff. 2019 was a good year. It wasn’t perfect by any means, I cried a lot too. But it was better than the years before. My mental health has been quite good, after some years of struggling. I worked really hard in 2019 and learned that I want to work less hours and more purposefully in 2020. I want to focus on my own stories and create my own books. In 2019 I discovered how much being outdoors means to me and in 2020 I want to plan some more hikes in nature. I want to travel to the UK a few times because that’s the place I feel most like myself. Life is not something I want to take for granted. I think the problems the earth is currently facing shows how fragile it is. Taking better care of everything is key for me for 2020.

"You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them." – Maya Angelou Nearly finished, over 100 illustrations for the wise women-book. This might be my favourite illustration that I did. Not only because of the books (because I friggin’ love books) but I love miss Angelou. When I was young, I was a huge Oprah Winfrey-fan and at one point she started talking about her. I read ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ and her sentences seeped into me. Sometimes I remember something, usually a wisdom to make me understand the world a bit better, and it’s often Maya Angelou’s words. There are more people that have made an impact on me, so I always try to listen to what they’re saying and learn from them. For example my grandmother. She said that the key to any good relationship is to keep talking and communicating. Whatever is on you heart, speak out. I’m grateful she gave me that. ]]> Kaiser Beamz, an anime video essayist with a Youtube channel where he usually publishes anime-related videos, posted a 17-minute montage that features one second from every Looney Tunes cartoon made between 1929 and 1969. He wanted to show, in the shortest format possible, how much animation can change in 40 years. “I don’t think I would’ve gotten into to researching old animation if it wasn’t for the Looney Tunes shorts,” Beamz writes on Youtube. “Shows like Toon Heads and the Bob Clampett Show that used to air on Cartoon Network we’re my first gateway to animation history.”

Looney Tunes is a famous series of animated short films that were made by Warner Bros. The first episode, Bosko the Talk-Ink Kid, came out in 1929. The last one, titled Injun Trouble, aired in 1969.
