Japanese ceramic artist Yuta Segawa takes a whole new approach to this art that raises the bar for all other ceramicists out there. Segawa not only makes colorful and great looking ceramic pieces like vases, cups, and bowl, but he also manages to do it while working on a much smaller scale.

Segawa made a name for himself by creating miniature pieces that in no way, shape, or form deteriorate from full-size pieces. This talented ceramicist is able to get all the details right and make an appealing structure while working on bits that can fit on one’s palm.

According to Segawa, he aims to explore the relationship between the artists and their works.

“Miniature pottery relates to the issue of the relationship between artists’ bodies and their works. It is a challenge to test the limits of what a human body can make on such a small scale,” he says on his official website.

Check out some of his works below.

Lorien Stern’s goal in life is simple but worthwhile: to create artwork that makes other people feel good. Her ceramic sculptures – whimsical, playful, and child-like – do just that. Based in Inyokern, California (a small town in the Western Mojave Desert), her brand also consists of clothing, home goods, and accessories.

One of her more outlandish creations is a ceramic shark head, which is made to hang on your wall. “I feel that sharks are misunderstood, even by me,” says Stern. “I am not a shark expert, but I am interested in how our fear can play a role in how we treat things that scare us. By making the sharks in bright colors, and with goofy expressions invited you to see sharks up close with a new perspective.”

Indeed, Stern doesn’t shy away from frightening subjects like predatory animals or even death (one series of sculptures is based around seemingly friendly ghosts). Those are explored through humoristic (sometimes goofy) lenses. “As someone who is afraid of a lot of stuff, I feel that it is an interesting challenge to bring scary subjects into a positive light,” she says.

Take a look for yourself.

The driving force in Katie Kimmel’s ceramic art is playfulness. Describing her humor as 98% angel, 2% devil, her pieces tend to center around themes like food and animals: a flower vase shaped like a dog or a ceramic shrimp cocktail set. It isn’t meant to be practical, but with almost 40k followers on Instagram – people don’t seem to mind that very much.

“A lot of the mediums that I work with are associated with kid crafts, and it could be that I only feel that way because they are mediums I’ve been using since I was a kid,” said Kimmel in an interview with Consort Design. “Sometimes I’ll really start to think about my work and I’m like, ‘Ok, I’m not an artist, I’m a 10-year-old living in an apartment’. Other times I’m like, ‘I AM an artist and my soul is 7 feet tall.’ I think that is a weird insecurity a lot of artists have – so maybe I became an artist when I started feeling that way.”

Since receiving her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015 where she studied ceramics, video, and painting, she’s been working from her studio in the Mojave Desert, California. Over the years, her style has remained fairly unchanged, but her craftsmanship has improved, and so has her sense of direction.

In other words: more fun is coming your way!

With tea-weather full-on and Christmas around the corner, your tea set could use a little upgrade. Ceramic artist Erica Lynn Hood has got your back this holiday season. Her ceramic sets, decorated with black and white illustrations of animals and plants, seem to balance perfectly as both art and function.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo2Izr7gZSi/

Since graduating from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2014 with a BFA in ceramics, Hood sells her own unique designs online and in-person at markets and open studios. According to her website, her surface design is very much inspired by animals, wallpaper, nature, and ink wash paintings.

“Nature is such an important part of her life and her artwork,” reads her website, with her pieces also providing careful reminders of the cost of modern living, while portraying threatened and endangered species of animals.

And when it comes to the work itself, she follows her advice to other aspiring artists: doing her absolute best. “Everyone wants to learn from/employ the best of the best,” she told the Boston Voyager, “so strive to be the best at what you’re passionate about and everything should fall into place. Pick up any job you can, no matter how small and insignificant because you can learn a lot from any experience and that will help you in the future.”

Here are some of our favorite pieces by her.

Los Angeles-based creative studio Canopic and their lead ceramics artist Curran Wedner create ceramic artworks that’s a bit different than you usually see. Their pieces are inspired by human anatomy and nature, which leads to unusual and sometimes unsettling designs.

Wedner’s ceramics mostly consist of glazed porcelain cups and bowls that are covered in all sorts of different motifs including fingers, toes, and faces. This results in one-of-a-kind creations that are quickly gaining popularity both in the US and worldwide.

The process of making these ceramics isn’t an easy one, as Wedner spends significant amount of time on the preparation and the designs.

“From start to finish this process takes weeks,” – he explains. “Each individual piece has at least a dozen hours in it before it’s up for sale.”

Wedner sells his creations on Etsy, while also exhibiting them in LA galleries. Check out some of his ceramic art below.

Ceramic sculptor, Genesis Belange, started out studying fashion design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has built props for advertising campaigns in Manhattan before earning her MFA from Hunter College, where she was accepted into the painting program. It was then that she found her true passion in clay.

Her long artistic journey paid off with her ceramic and porcelain sculptures, that are now featured in numerous galleries and museums. Her internet presence is also worth noting, with more than 17 thousand followers on Instagram alone.

But being a sculptor doesn’t mean she doesn’t incorporate her advertising knowledge into her artwork. In fact, most of her art seems to poke fun at the advertising industry. “The advertising industry understands the strength of visual persuasion and I find it fascinating that our desires can be manipulated through aesthetics,” Genesis told It’s Nice That. “I use elements of that persuasive language in my work.”

“Objects are often surrogates for our self-identity,” she went on to say. “The uncanny is the feeling of something being strangely and uncomfortably familiar, this discomfort comes from seeing ones projected self in an object. I am using humour and style to address the complexity, nuance, and dissonance of human psychology.”

Check out some of our favorite works of hers in the gallery below.

Looking to upgrade your tea game? We’ve got just the thing for you! A ceramic tea set adorned with prison tattoos. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE connects the subversive art of Russian criminal tattoos with traditional blue porcelain design, uniting two opposed but equally important and influential strands of Russian art history.

The artist behind this unique project it Valeria Monis. Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, raised in Haifa, and living and working in Tel-Aviv, Israel, Monis has been creating her ceramic sets since graduating in 2015 from Holon Institute of Technology.

Each of her ceramic pieces is designed and crafted incorporating illustrations taken from photographs, personal stories, and the Soviet police prison files. And just like an original tattoo, each plate is a single edition. Now the only question left is: will you dare serve your tea with these sets?

Take a look!
