Generations of kids have grown up playing with Barbie dolls. But as the works of Brazilian artist Daniel Lima show, there is no age limit when it comes to their appreciation.

Lima earned a massive social media following thanks to impressive Barbie doll makeovers. He improves on the original design of the dolls by providing them a “glow-up” with new clothes, accessories, and makeup.

Lima often shares videos that offer a behind-the-scenes look into his creative process. These clips show how much effort the artist puts in his works and how meticulous he is, paying attention to every single detail in order to get the best possible results.

Oftentimes, Lima doesn’t just stop at improving the looks of the original Barbie. He will go to great lengths, repainting the facial features and even replacing the hair, to create an entirely different doll.

If you played with Barbie dolls as a kid or just appreciate great craftsmanship, then there is no doubt that you will enjoy Lima’s works. Maybe they will even inspire you to try out something similar and give your old Barbie doll a new and refreshed look. Continue scrolling to check out more of Lima’s works, and get ready to be impressed.

When it comes to stick-n-poke tattoos, Tatiana Kartomten, aka Tati Compton, is nothing short of a celebrity. With more than 260k followers on Instagram, she only takes bookings a month in advance, working out of Saved Tattoo in LA’s Arts District. But even with so much going on for her, Kartomten admits that she’s not in it for the fame.

“I’ve never wanted recognition,” she remarked once, in an interview with Amadeus, “which is why tattooing is great because it’s for someone else.” Born in Marin and raised in San Mateo, Kartomten now lives in Echo Park. She began experimenting with “home-made” tattoo art in her early twenties, and after spending a few years hand-poking at Sang Bleu London, she moved to Los Angeles where she continues to pioneer in making stick and poke tattoos a respected art form.

According to Kartomten, she gave and received her first tattoo when she and her friend hand-poked each other’s fingers. “I started with friends at home in San Francisco,” she recalled. “We wanted to do it then and there, and I had sewing needles and India ink. I became a professional over a long period of time.”

A self-taught tattoo artist through and through, she notes that most of her early clients had never heard of her chosen technique – an ancient form of body art that involves using a sharp point and some ink – but they gave her a chance and liked the results. “I always liked that it’s a lowbrow art form,” she says.

Britney Tokyo’s nail art compliments her flamboyant personality. Not one to shy away from making a fashion statement, her style is a fusion of Japanese and American styles, attracting clients as big as the Kardashian clan, Rita Ora, and Ariana Grande. A former actress and TV personality herself, her nail career took off thanks to SNS, the Japanese Social Networking Service.

“Even now, I receive most of my business inquiries through my Instagram,” admitted Tokyo in an interview with Racked. Born in Tokyo and currently residing in LA, she’s continuously inspired by fashion, music, and art, with her nail art being a colorful mishmash of sorts.

“I’ve always been surrounded by art, and loved to draw since I was a little girl,” says Tokyo. “I went to nail school, but it’s only been like three years since I’ve really sunk into the nails world. I started during the same time that nail art started to become a thing. I’ve always been lucky with timing for a lot of things, so I’m very thankful.”

Working for and with the best of the best, Tokyo has a nonchalant, down to earth approach when it comes to her celebrity clientele. “I usually never get nervous for any celebrities I do nails for,” she admits. “I am a freelance nailist, without residing in an agency, so usually the celebrities contact me directly. Since they already know my work that makes it easier for me to work on them.”

Jessica Washick is, arguably, the coolest gal on Instagram. A nail artist on top of being a fashion designer, her official job title at Nike is “Senior Color Designer,” so you know her Instagram page is gonna be eye-popping, to say the least.

According to Washick, she first started painting her nails in 2007 after a tough break-up, sharing her nail art in her blog titled “You Don’t Need A Man, You Need A Manicure.” She went on to study fashion design in Parsons, which ultimately lead her to her dream job at Nike.

“I’ve always wanted to design at Nike, but as I got deeper and deeper into fashion and the nail world, I didn’t know how I could contribute since my background was in accessory design and nails,” she relayed in an interview with HYPEBAE. “One day, I went onto the Nike career website and saw an opening for a color designer. There’s a lot of color obsession in doing nails so I knew I’d be able to leverage those skills, and I believed my background in accessory design could amplify that. I actually showed my nail art portfolio for part of the interview and they were receptive. That was really cool.”

With a clear passion for color, Washick doesn’t shy from making a bold statement, with her designs being often vibrant as they are playful. “Colors play a huge role because they evoke emotion, and a good color story can take you places,” she reflects. Follow her Instagram page for that extra dose of color.

When it comes to nail art, Simcha Whitehill, aka Miss Pop, doesn’t shy away from colors and patterns. Based in NYC, she jokingly refers to her style as “Back to the Future” and judging by her Instagram page, it’s easy to see why, as her eye-popping designs are very clearly inspired by ’80s aesthetics.

“I like to create a retro look full of bold colors and prints that still incorporates current trends to amp up classic styles,” she shared in an interview with Style Caster. “Of course, since nails are my fave accessory, to match all that shimmer, I’ve been bejeweling my toes too with metallic gold and silver polish. Plus, I line my bottom lash with silver so my eyes have extra twinkle too. I’m not exactly an au natural kind of girl, so especially in the summer when my usual makeup just melts right off, a little sweat-proof glam beauty makes me feel done up.”

With almost 50k followers on Instagram as well as features in fashion magazines such as Elle and Marie Claire and runway shows during New York Fashion Week – you might just want to follow her lead. Here are some of our favorite looks by her:

Looking for your next nail art inspiration? Why not go straight to the source. Madeline Poole is arguably the queen of nails. So much so that in 2014 she was officially appointed as the Global Color Ambassador of the American beauty brand Sally Hansen. Aside from that, she also shares her tips and tricks through nail art tutorials, that can be viewed on Vogue.com, TeenVogue.com, Refinery29, The Coveteur, and IntoTheGloss.

Her original take on nail art has also made her some of an internet celebrity, with almost 135k followers on Instagram. Poole also shares her tips and tricks through nail art tutorials, that can be viewed on Vogue.com, TeenVogue.com, Refinery29, The Coveteur, and IntoTheGloss.

“I am a color enthusiast,” she said in an interview with The Cut. “But to be honest, I only like to wear white, red, or occasionally orange on my nails. So I don’t ever force people to wear [crazy] nail colors because I totally understand a preference for a classic. Because I’m so colorful in my wardrobe, I prefer to wear very basic nail colors so I don’t go over the edge.”

“I will always and forever love a leopard print,” she adds. “That’s also one of the easiest nail designs to start with. Organic shapes are always easier to do as they’re basically just a series of squiggles and dots.” But her designs go much further than a series of squiggles and dots. Take a look for yourself!

Eun Kyung Park challenges our ideas about nail art (and beauty in general), playing with textures, shape, and colors, transforming in turn, her clients’ hands into contemporary pieces of art. Based in Seoul, her clients include K-Pop artists, high-profile social media influencers, and models at Seoul Fashion Week; with her nail art being featured in top tier fashion publications like Vogue and Refinery29.

“I think the concept of beauty is simply an idea of self-care,” she told Dazed Digital. “Everyone can have a different standard of ‘beautiful’ or ‘pretty,’ so I think it’s an idea of trying to present oneself according to their own standards. I guess it’s all for the self-satisfaction.”

When it comes to beauty, Kyung Park knows a thing or to. “As soon as I was old enough to go to high school and started learning about make-up, I knew I wanted to learn those skills at a beauty academy,” she admitted. “After a while studying make-up at the academy, I realized I wasn’t very interested anymore. That’s when my teacher suggested trying nail art.”

With more than 350k followers on Instagram, there’s no slowing her down.

Vanity Projects puts the art in nail art. A mixture of a nail art salon and an art space, it defines itself as a luxury concept, merging a high-end nail art atelier with video art programming. Founded by independent curator, Rita de Alencar Pinto in 2008, it started out as a pop-up that would soon grow into so much more.

Now, based in two primary locations – the first in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and the second in Miami, Florida – it’s home to nail artists from around the world. With an artist-in-residence program, it also offers top international nail artists the chance to exchange techniques and ideas. With a host of video artists as well, the result is both entertaining and fashionable.

“Our vision is to re-shape the way patrons perceive and experience video art by placing it in an engaging environment,” reads their website. “We specialize in innovative manicures from the most sought-after nail artists in addition to a standard nail salon menu using the finest nail lacquers.”

But aside from their two primary salons, they’ve also taken to other stages, participating in pop-ups at the Pulitzer Foundation in St. Louis, The Brooklyn Museum, The Aldrich Museum, and the Aspen Museum of Art. Here are some of their more eye-popping nail designs.

Halloween might be over, but it doesn’t mean you have to store your bold eyeshadow pallets and resign to the same smoky eye look. Self-taught makeup artist, known simply as Lottie, is here to inspire you, every single day of the year. Her makeup looks vary, from bold and graphic to more minimal everyday looks. But whatever she does, she puts her own original spin on it.

“I thrive on challenge — it’s more interesting to me,” she admitted in an interview with Allure. “Some people like consistency and reliability, but I’m just the opposite… You can be an amazing makeup artist, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to be great at runway,” she explained. “For me, working in TV is not right. Doing bridal is not right. I actually need that stress!”

Raised in Southern California, Lottie was drawn to anything and everything creative from a very young age. Upon completing her education in graphic design, she moved to London, England and quickly found work on a number of cutting edge projects. Breaking away from design a few years later, she has since moved into what she considers her true calling.

Her artistry took her to fashion shows in New York, Milan, London, Miami, and Los Angeles and she has worked with brands as huge as Urban Decay, Marc Jacobs Beauty, and Hermes. Among her celebrity clients are icons like Drew Barrymore, Karen O, Rihanna, and Emilia Clarke.

Prepare to be inspired.
