Entertainment agency Sky Elements recently treated the citizens of North Richland Hills, Texas, with an impressive Christmas-themed drone show. A grand total of 1,499 drones went up to the sky to display scenes from the holiday ballet The Nutcracker, a large Christmas tree, and various other images.

The show not only brought smiles and awe to the faces of 2,000 visitors but also broke two Guinness World Records. The image of the standing Nutcracker was honored with the world record for the “largest aerial display of a fictional character formed by multirotors/drones.”

On the other hand, the image showing a Christmas tree packed with gifts in front of a snow-covered window set the world record for “the largest aerial image formed by multirotors/drones.”

The show was initially supposed to feature 1,500 drones, but one drone didn’t make it to the air. Luckily, its absence wasn’t notable, and the show still managed to look amazing.

“It was so amazing to break two Guinness World Records in my hometown once again. There’s nothing better than bringing the holiday spirit to families, and I think this show did just that,” Preston Ward, Chief Pilot of Sky Elements Drone Shows, told Guinness World Records’ official website.

Buenos Aires, Argentina-based digital art studio MOLI recently shared an intriguing new project on social media. Their talented artists created a series of digital illustrations titled Golden Era, which feature vintage tech gadgets being “repaired” with the use of kintsugi.

Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese technique used for repairing broken pottery or other objects, during which broken pieces are joined together using gold or silver. The idea is that the repair should be visible because it is part of the history of the object.

Taking a new approach with kintsugi, MOLI decided to imagine broken pieces of technology being brought back to life with gold. The series features four iconic tech gadgets from Japan, including the original Nintendo Game Boy, a digital watch produced by Seiko, Sony Mega Watchman, and Sony’s vertical PS-F9 turntable, aka The Flamingo.

According to the studio, the goal of the Golden Era series is to pay tribute to Japan’s pop culture and country’s tradition.

“Hidden in the narrow streets of Japan’s urban landscape, tech gems from the 80s are given a second chance to shine,” Moli says about the project. “Through their scars, these nostalgic-driven rescues become time decoration treasures, carrying secrets and stories from another life.”

Leica is one of the most famous camera manufacturers in the world. Their cameras are lauded for quality, design, and innovation, being a prized possession for every photograph enthusiast who owns them. And something tells us that many more people will own a Leica camera in the future thanks to their latest product.

Leica recently announced a new camera model called SOFORT 2. The successor of their instant camera SOFORT, it represents a hybrid creation between an instant and a digital camera.

Just like any instant camera, SOFORT 2 will capture the photo and print it out. But also, it will store it in a digital version so you have a version to send to your friend’s inbox or post on social media. Designated memory is enough for 45 photos, but users can expand it with memory cards.

SOFORT 2, which will be released in November at a price of $389, comes with all sorts of other features that users will appreciate. For example, you will be able to upload digital photos to the camera and then print them out.

“It encourages an appreciation of the now. Because it‘s not just about recording a moment, but about sharing it with those who make it memorable,” says Leica about the camera.

Would you pay close to $40,000 for an iPhone? Probably not, but someone just did. At a recent auction held by LCG Auctions, an unnamed buyer paid that sum for an original sealed iPhone.

When it came out in 2007, the first generation iPhone with a 2-megapixel camera and 4GB of storage went for $499. It appears that one person decided to buy one and then put it away for 15 years. They dusted it off recently and offered it at an auction with a starting bid of $2,500.

“Brand new, never activated,” it says in the description. “Collectors and investors would be hard pressed to find a superior example. Relevance and rarity comprise a winning formula for this red hot collectible.”

According to the LCG Auctions’ website, 28 bids were placed in total between September 30th and October 16th. The winning bid stood at $39,339.60, beating the previous record price for an unopened iPhone 1 of $35,000.

The first generation iPhone was announced in January 2007 before seeing U.S. release six months later. The product started a smartphone revolution and is often credited for making Apple one of the most successful companies in the world. It is estimated that 6.1 million iPhone units were sold before the phone was discontinued in 2008 to make room for iPhone 3G.

Milan Jaram is a talented artist who expresses his creativity in a number of ways. He creates traditional art like paintings and illustrations, designs books and magazine covers, and does visual effects and digital art. However, it was his recent collaboration with Artificial Intelligence that really put him on the map, at least in terms of popularity on social media.

Intrigued by the possibilities of Artificial Intelligence in art, Jaram decided to give AI various art-related tasks and see what it would come up with. He uploads the results on his TikTok account, and they are usually nothing short of impressive. This is especially the case with the tasks in which AI reimagines pop culture characters as real people.

So far, Jaram tasked AI to bring to life the characters of The Simpsons, South Park, Sailor Moon, and various other pop culture staples, and each time the AI delivered. While sometimes disturbing, these reimaginations are usually spot on, and you can easily recognize each character.

“The idea for this series came to me from trying to be creative with AI, pushing its limits and seeing what it could do,” Jaram shared in a recent interview.

Combining traditional art with digital tools enables artists to take the best from both worlds and often leads to some impressive results. A great example is unique architectural sketches from Ukrainian artist Nikita Busyak.

While looking for ways to pass the time during long college classes, Busyak often found himself doing sketches. His most frequent subjects were buildings and monuments he saw in his hometown or during his trips around Europe. He also frequently made up his own architectural designs.

One time, Busyak decided to see if there was a way to improve his simple sketches with computer software. He experimented with effects until he got an idea to turn on the lights inside his buildings using a digital tool. This added a whole new dimension to his works, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere that pops up from the paper.

“I instantly fell in love with the effect and realized that this was the style I’ve been searching for for so many years,” he explained in a recent interview.

These architectural sketches proved to be quite popular on social media, with internet users being impressed not only by their glowing effects but also the variety of architectural styles they display, from the Baroque period to drawing of a simple cabin in the woods. Check out more of Busyak’s works below.

People have been fascinated with robots for who knows how long. Some incorporated them in novels, others drew them, while some tried to make them. And although the robots are almost always imagined as highly-functioning machines with some human qualities, the reality is a lot different.

Despite the impressive technological progress that we made, robots are still very limited in what they can do. So far, no one has been able to truly bring fiction to reality and build a robot that can talk, move, or do other things inherent to humans.

Still, this didn’t stop illustrator Annada Menon from getting creative and dedicating an entire month of work to robots. She decided to give herself a challenge that would see her draw a different robot each day.

According to Menon, she occasionally does similar challenges, and this time she wanted to get out of her comfort zone. Not being great with drawing machines, she figured robots would be a great way to check all the boxes.

“My approach for the series was to make the robots cute and friendly,” said Menon about her works.

The challenge was a success, and she managed to come up with some beautiful and intriguing designs.  One of them even won an award at the annual “MARCH of ROBOTS” competition organized by influential illustrator DaCosta Bayley.

Check out some of our favorite robots from the series below.

Zach Lieberman has many accolades to his name. A new media artist, designer, computer programmer, and educator, he loves experimenting with code and hopes to keep himself—and others—surprised. According to Lieberman, his main focus with his work is to show how computation can be used as a medium for poetry.

His experimental approach to art is based around computer graphics, human-computer interaction, and computer vision, using technology in a playful way that aims to break down the fragile boundary between the visible and the invisible.

Based in New York City, Lieberman creates artwork using code, focusing on building experimental drawing and animation tools. His work also includes interactive environments that invite participants to join in and become performers themselves.

With a B.A. in Fine Arts from Hunter College and both a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Design and Technology from Parsons School of Design, his work (a perfect blend of art and technology) has appeared in numerous exhibitions around the world, including Ars Electronica, Futuresonic, CeBIT, and the Off Festival.

But Lieberman also shares his work online, on his Instagram page – a page wholly dedicated to his experimentations with code. According to Lieberman, most of his sketches are coded in openFrameworks (using Xcode), while a few use paper.js.

“One thing I try to do, especially with the Instagram sketches, is try to stick with very simple things, like simple geometry,” explained Lieberman in an interview with the Verge. “What happens if you start with a circle and then you rotate it, and you extrude it and you revolve it? It’s almost like using geometry as a starting point, and glitching or changing through things.”

“The other thing that I’m really passionate about is motion,” he adds, “and how movement and animation can create an emotional response.”

Check out some of his recent work in the gallery below, and purchase a digital print of his work here:

With well over 130k followers on Instagram, 3D artist and designer David Milan is a force to be reckoned with. His work includes a multiple of disciplines, mainly typography and illustration. “I love working and experimenting with colors, textures, shapes, and forms,” he writes on his website. “I’m always looking for new projects.”

But when it comes to the creative process itself, Milan surprisingly describes it as “basic”. “The hardest part of my job is finding a good quote or a word,” he relayed in an interview with Wix. “I could spend hours looking for a good one.” Once he has a text, he starts making sketches in different styles. After choosing the best one, he then proceeds to trace it with a marker, brush or digitally on a tablet. Finally, he puts the lettering on a photo or image, adding some finishing touches.

“I usually work with tablets like Wacom and iPad Pro with the Apple pencil,” he says, describing his toolbox, “but I also love working with Crayola markers and Tombow brush pens. They’re such great tools for every lettering artist. As for the digital process, I usually work with Photoshop for different cool effects.”

His different approach to both typography and design has attracted brands as big as Apple, Huawei, Facebook, Pepsi, and Adobe, all of which have commissioned work from him. You’d want to see what the hype is all about:

A short stop-motion video below shows an 8-bit Super Mario going on one of his adventures in the real world! The video was created by designer Win Laroy and it features the famous video game plumber running amok around the house, collecting coins as he goes. The video is a director’s cut version “of the Real-Life Mario stop motion video with new scenes (living room/stairs) and music,” as the author describes on Youtube.

Super Mario Bros. is a popular platform video game that was first published in 1985 by Nintendo. Super Mario as a character appeared in many other Nintendo’s games, but the most popular game comes from Super Mario Bros.

See the stop-motion video by Laroy below.
