Graphic designer and digital artist Alycia Rainaud (aka Maalavidaa), is known for her highly saturated yet dark aesthetic, creating surreal landscapes of oozing color that swirls about. Based in Paris, Rainaud graduated in June 2018 with a Master’s Degree in Graphic Design and has recently started working as an independent director.

Inspired by Jungian therapy and creative exercises, Maalavidaa provides Rainaud a way of self-expression. “My work has always been influenced by publishing design, hybrid books, new technologies, psychology, digital art, visual effects, and experiments,” she relayed in an interview with Murze. “I started studying graphic design more than seven years ago and finally graduated this past June by working on my thesis where I tried to link books to psyche. In the meantime, I started to work as a digital artist more than two years ago, in 2016. Creating Malavida was a way for me to express myself through different media and daily creative work but in a more abstract level.”

“I’ve always been interested and inspired by art in general,” she notes. “I always remember going to all the museums when I was a child and being mesmerized. When I was younger I used to be really focused on dark analog photography but also a lot about abstract art in general. I guess that’s why my works try to bring both of them together.”

Alongside her print-oriented background, she is also experienced with branding, motion design, programming, UI/UX, textile design, laser cutting, 3D printing, offset/screenprinting, cultural mediation and global art direction. And with almost 170k followers on Instagram, she clearly knows what she’s doing.

Jack Sachs’ animations and illustrations are a bit wonky, just the way he likes it. Working primarily with Cinema4D, Zbrush, Sculptris, and the Adobe suite, his 3D art has caught the attention of giants like Spotify, The New York Times, Google, MTV, and Lazy Oaf.

But his unique style was actually the result of an unfortunate accident. Having trained as a traditional pen and paper type of artist, he had to upgrade his toolbox after suffering a massive injury to his drawing hand right before his final year at university. While his hand healed he learned to use 3D software as well as studying animation, which resulted in a new sort of art he’s now become recognized for.

“Everything I’ve learned so far is from free YouTube tutorials and forums,” he told Juxtapoz. “There are so many resources for people starting out in CGI and I owe a lot to the people who make that content… Coming from a design background and working in that area, I think its easier to teach yourself. Of course, there are certain jobs in CGI and animation, in general, where teaching yourself probably won’t cut it.”

“My main advice for people still studying is not to be hung up if you don’t know exactly what you want to make,” he adds. “I think it’s healthy not to have preformed ideas of exactly what you’ll do when you leave art school, but it’s still super daunting.”

“From the beginning, we have applied a ‘don’t look back’ approach,” they stressed in an interview with Inky Goodness. “Make something, publish it and move on. Because of the repetition of the character style, we are accumulating details which are improving with each illustration. The clearest example of this is in the body shapes. They have changed from a geometric beginning to having a more realistic, stronger structure, which is more in tune with our message of depicting real women.”

Menzies, an illustrator and craftswoman, and Reverter, a 3D artist and animator, work together to create their unique characters. With collaborations with the New York Times, Apple, and Google, their artistic recipe proved to be successful.
