Ariana Heinzman is a Vashon Island, Washington-based artist who creates clay pieces that are part vessels and part ceramic sculptures. Thanks to their colorful and quirky designs, her creations can serve as a flower vase but also as standalone decorative artwork.

A big reason why Heinzman’s clay vessels are so great is that the artist doesn’t strive for perfection according to her own admittance. She allows her intuition to take the driver’s seat during the process of creating a piece, resulting in one-of-a-kind creations.

Describing her work, Heinzman says it’s meant to “represent the duality of the desire to escape and succumb to nature and the desire to control nature and to be drawn into human civilization.” Her designs are based on the imagery found in nature and borrow patterns from leaves, flowers, and fruit. This is why it isn’t surprising that colors play an important part in the artist’s creative process.

“I use vibrant colors like a bird of paradise would, or perhaps a flower, or a juicy fruit; as an invitation to pick up what I am putting down, to cross-pollinate, to take a bite, etc.,” she explains.

In the world of art, there are many paths to explore. Some artists create dreamy landscapes, while others embrace romantic styles. Among these options is surrealism, and one artist stands out in that particular realm: Austin Howlett, who has almost 77,000 followers on Instagram and has been gaining quite a following.

As you scroll through his Instagram page, it’s easy to see why he’s getting so popular. First and foremost, his painting skills are top-notch. His talent is apparent, and it’s also clear that this is someone who has put in tireless hours to become a master of his craft.

But there’s more to Howlett than just technical skills. He has a unique style that sets him apart. His surreal paintings often depict giants in mountainous landscapes or people merged with trees. If these descriptions don’t make sense to you, they’re not supposed to. The beauty of surreal art is that it doesn’t always make sense.

You have to look at the art yourself to appreciate the structure within the chaos, and if you take a look at Howlett’s page, you may just witness the magic. Before you know it, you might find that you “get” what Howlett is trying to say.

Pyrography is a complex and unforgiving type of art that doesn’t leave much room for errors. But this didn’t stop Nigerian artist Alex Peter Idoko from giving it a try, on the contrary. Idoko not only mastered pyro art but also developed his own recognizable style that is impressing art lovers from around the world.

Idoko is best known for using pyrography to create hyperrealistic portraits. Despite working with a demanding technique, this self-taught artist is able to capture his subjects with impressive accuracy. Using fire, razorblades, and sandpaper, Idoko etches the portraits on wood in a way that makes the viewers think they are looking at a photograph and not something drawn with fire.

“Working on wood makes me collaborate creatively with nature and a sense of connection with life in all wonderful diversity, which adds meaning to my art,” the artist explains in a statement posted on his official website.

Understandably, Idoko’s process is demanding and time-consuming. According to the artist, he can sometimes spend more than five weeks working on a single piece. However, just one glance at the finished artwork is enough to know the effort was worth it.

Idoko’s works have been exhibited in galleries around the world, including his home country of Nigeria, Italy, the United States, and the UK. He also frequently shares his newest pieces on social media. Check out more of them below.

You don’t often get a chance to own a lamp created by a renowned artist. So, it isn’t surprising that the lamp created by Dutch artist Pieter “Parra” Janssen in collaboration with Case Studyo is causing such a buzz on social media.

The lamp is based on a previous ceramic sculpture from the “Pop Fruit” series by Parra and comes in a shape of a bell pepper with added legs and high heels. It comes with saturated blue and pink color scheme, which looks captivating when lit up.

“The sculptural lamp features a cozy colorway that is sure to provide good vibes, mellow moods, and positive energy,” Case Studyo said about the lamp.

Unfortunately, getting your hands on this lamp will be quite challenging. There will be only 1,500 of them available, and they won’t be “first come, first served” basis. Instead, those interested in getting enter an online raffle and hope they will get a chance to own it.

This isn’t the first time that Parra and Case Studyo have collaborated on such a project. They released another Pop Fruit-inspired lamp last year. This lamp was based on a pear and was similarly sold through a raffle system.

Talented artists don’t need an extensive color palette or impeccable canvas to create great works of art. One great example is Greek artist Melpomeni Chatzipanagiotou, who uses just pen and ink to create intricate drawings on wood slices.

Despite working with limited material, Chatzipanagiotou manages to pack her wood illustrations with amazing details and captivating scenes. These pieces often explore diverse themes, which is a result of the artist’s “broad interests,” as she explains on her official website.

Chatzipanagiotou’s creative process mainly focuses on “natural habitat and its living inhabitants“ that she pairs with some surreal elements in order to give her works an otherworldly touch.” She also looks to “pay homage to Mother Nature” while exploring themes on how all life is connected. This leads to drawings of flower-covered deer under a star-filled sky, dreamlike landscapes, and tranquil scenes of cabins in the woods.

Aside from her wood slice illustrations, the artist also works on several other projects. This includes paper illustrations and drawings in a similar style. She is also working on a coloring book that will become available in 2023.

Chatzipanagiotou often shares her newest wood slice artworks on her official Instagram page, while some can also be purchased through her Etsy store. You can check out more of them below.

Aaron Elvis Jupin’s art is very much his own. A blend of realistic and surrealistic imagery, it often features cartoonish characters with references to childhood classics. Other themes include windows and mirrors, creating a landscape that is composed of memories and reflections. There’s also a heavy dose of humor in his work, a sort of tongue in cheekiness that makes for an ironic effect.

Based in California, Jupin is mostly known for his paintings but also sculpts and draws. In March 2017, he published his first book by Stolen Books titled “DOUBLE CHECK YOU’RE ALONE”.

With his paintings, an element of play is introduced through optical illusions: “I usually have an idea that I’ll mock-up in photoshop using an assortment of references,” Jupin explained in an interview with Juxtapoz, where he shared his creative process. “But typically, I leave room for chance,” he admits. “I like to give myself options in the direction my painting can go. I think some of the best paintings I’ve made come from those opportunities.”

But though immersed in irony, Jupin aspires to be as truthful as he can with his art. “I’ve been trying to be more honest with myself as a painter and making paintings that interest me,” he notes. “The humor comes from the viewer’s own subconscious connection to these images, and I’m not trying to force this humor on anyone.”

According to Jupine, exploring the anti-real within the logic of cartoons is when the paintings become absurd. “It’s at this moment that I feel levity become present, the paintings explore animation and absurdist reality comes along with it,” he says. Indeed, painting through a nostalgic lens allows him to communicate the absurdity of how images from Disney cartoons are remembered from childhood.

“There is no rhyme or reason to my process, no schedule in how I made these recent works,” says Jupin. “Some days I feel like drawing and other days I feel like painting.” Follow his creative journey on social media.

Though predominantly abstract, Angela Heisch’s paintings seem to be in dialogue with nature. This quality is very much intentional. In fact, according to Heisch, her work stems from her constant investigation of the natural world. Using repetition and patterns, Heisch aims to replicate balanced organic compositions found in nature. The end result is both familiar and unfamiliar—an uncharted territory one is invited to explore.

“I’ve always been inspired by patterns in nature, natural phenomena, and things that feel much bigger than ourselves, while also feeling familiar,” reflected Heisch in a recent interview with Whitewall. And yet, being abstract, her paintings also have a sense of openness to them.

“I’ve been thinking more about fantasy, really striving for less rigidity in my work,” says Heisch. “I’m thinking about space, actual imagery of outer space, but more so I’m thinking about the forms in my paintings existing in a space that isn’t grounded or rooted in architecture.”

These spaces can reflect both the outside world and our personal interpretations of it – a psychological landscape of sorts that reminds of surrealist paintings from the early 20th century. “I’m thinking of this newer work as exhibiting forms grown in nature, the balance and chaos that entails, and having lots of fun exploring all the possibilities of that imagery,” says Heisch.

Her sense of exploration and experimentation can also be traced to her creative process. “I start with a series of thumbnails, to get a few possible scenarios for a painting,” explains Heisch. “From there, I most often make a pastel based on one of the thumbnails. The pastels are great to work out color, and maybe to edit composition.” She adds that while she tries to match colors accurately to the pastel during the first few layers of underpainting, she usually stops paying such close attention to the pastel reference as the painting progresses.

Born in New Zealand, Heischwas raised in Buffalo, New York, and attended SUNY Potsdam, where she received her Bachelors in Fine Arts in 2011. She then went on to attend the University at Albany, where she received her Masters in Fine Arts in 2014. Now based in in Brooklyn, New York, her selected solo exhibitions include Trapeze, Davidson Gallery, Heed, Transmitter Gallery (both in NY), and Like Molasses, No Place Gallery, Columbus, OH.

Describing intimacy to an outsider visiting Earth is as hard as describing color to a blind person. True intimacy is understood through experience, and negotiating feelings through words oftentimes dwindles a complex experience into syllables. And yet, through visual art, such feelings might be better understood.

Take for instance Hiejin Yoo’s paintings. Based on daily observations, they capture mundane moments—snapshots in time—that make the tapestry of memory and feelings. Moments like reaching out your hands to touch a friend, pet a dog, or grab a fruit.

Mundane events and everyday moments are depicted with large abstracted planes of color and bold, layered marks that evoke the subjectivity of Yoo’s inner life. But oddly enough, these very personal moments have a truthfulness about them that resonates with others.

“The motivations of my works are from very personal stories, but they’re also from everyday life,” shared Yoo in an interview with Juxtapoz. “I’ve met lots of people who have told me personal stories based on their own interpretations of the works, so I think people must be reminiscing about their own personal experiences when they see my work in their homes.”

According to Yoo, being able to express those experiences as paintings and sharing them with other people has been exciting and she’s grateful for it. “I hope those who view my works can also find happiness in their lives when thinking about these moments with their families, friends, or sometimes strangers,” she notes.

It is through these relatable snapshots that a connection is made, and intimacy is being translated to visual experience. “The paintings draw connections between my own personal experiences and those of others,” relays Yoo. “By highlighting and amplifying these moments, my work responds to the otherwise overlooked and underappreciated aspects of daily life. While deeply personal, these works also hint at the ways art can address shared feelings and experiences, whether grandiose or mundane.”

Born in Germany, raised in South Korea, and based in Los Angeles, California since 2015, Yoo admits that painting has been a huge passion throughout her life. “Living in the United States with a Korean cultural background inspires me more because of the differences between them,” she notes.

Based in the rural village of Upper Moutere, New Zealand, and surrounded by vineyards, orchards, and country gardens it comes as no surprise that Fleur Woods’s art is inspired by nature.

Her detailed stitched paintings are created using fabric, gouache, and ultimately embroidery. “Stitched Paintings is the term I use to describe my style of work,” she writes on her website. “The process flows like this: I paint blank pieces of linen in abstract washes then add botanical, illustrative details in with acrylic paint or gouache or ink, finally I add texture through stitch.”

Partly trained and partly self-taught, Woods has learnt her craft through trial and error. “Coming to stitch as a mixed media artist I have taught myself a variety of embroidery techniques which probably don’t follow traditional embroidery guides but work for the kind of mark making I enjoy creating,” she writes.

“Stitch for me has become a bit of an obsession which marries my love of detail, color, texture, and allows hours of quiet reflection and Netflix binge watching,” she concludes. Sounds ideal to us!

Wangari Mathenge’s paintings explore her cultural upbringing, introducing elements from both African society and the Diaspora. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1973, she spent her time as a child between London and Kenya, before moving to the US when she was an adult. Currently based in Chicago, Illinois, Wangari is a graduate of Howard University and Georgetown University Law Center and is currently pursuing an MFA in Painting and Drawing at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago.

But her introduction to art was much earlier, as a young child. “I started making art as a child,” she shared in an interview with Issue Magazine. “I was probably first introduced to it in kindergarten. My first recollection comprises plasticine, paper collage, watercolor and the varied possibilities of Lego blocks.”

These days, the majority of her work is based around people—portrait painting, that is. Often depicting people with whom she has significant relationships, Mathenge’s paintings are realized through structured compositions emboldened with gestural strokes and mark making.

According to Mathenge, through her work, she hopes to demystify what it means to be a Kenyan woman. “I was always intrigued by the fact that there was so much ignorance in the West as to the totality of conditions in Kenya,” she admits.

“Questions regarding the building structures, the cities, transportation systems all stumped me because these are things that I took for granted—that the West was aware that nations in Africa were organized and developing.”

Her portrait art is, at times, a reminder of what it looks like in these liminal spaces (between Africa and the diaspora), other times simply a glimpse back into the past, into other spaces as a way of recalling and recording. Scroll down to see some recent works by her.
