Jasmin Siddiqui, aka Hera, is a German-born artist with many talents. She is a poet, illustrator, and graffiti artist, but most people know her for her amazing murals that can be seen on buildings and walls of a number of cities in Europe and other parts of the world.

Hera’s murals are mainly focused on humans, their place in the world, and how they deal with social injustice and political dilemmas.

Being the daughter of a Pakistani immigrant, Hera is also drawn to the subjects of immigration, movement, and search for a better life. Just recently, she created a piece on this subject called “We all are Birds of Migration. Some With Feathers, Some Without,” in Stavanger, Norway, for the Nuart festival.

“We all exist today because our ancestors at some point either freely migrated to greener pastures, more fertile grounds, greater resources, and safer living conditions, or were forcibly moved from one place to another at some point at some point in history,” said Hera about the work. “… My mural is a tribute to those travellers, nomads, explorers, survivors.”

If you don’t happen to have a chance to check out Hera’s murals in person, scroll below to see them through the magic of social media.

Painting murals for Los Angeles-based muralist Sean Yoro isn’t just about creating artwork on a piece of concrete. It’s also about overcoming challenges and growing as an artist with each experience.

Yoro, who also goes by his alter ego Hula, paints his artwork mostly on places that are only accessible by water. He hits the waters on his surfboard and has to paddle out to the designated spot while making sure his supplies don’t end up falling from the board. When he gets there, he battles currents and needs to work quickly before the tides come and interfere with his art.

“I had to learn not only a faster and more efficient way to paint while on a surfboard but also blending layers together needed to be able to adapt to the tides and other variables that might restrict certain areas of the wall,” Yoro revealed in a recent chat with Colossal.

The unusual locations also cause his murals to evolve constantly. The visibility changes depending on the tides, while water leaves marks on the artwork that alter it in a surreal way.

Check out more of his impressive works below.

“Me in the studio” vs me in the studio

A post shared by Ellen Rutt (@ellenrutt) on

Fully immersed in her artistic lifestyle, her creations are celebrated both online and offline, with more than 30k fans on Instagram and exhibitions around the world as well as murals in cities like Detroit, New York, Chicago, Canada, and France. But like most creative spirits, it took her some time to embrace her calling.

“Honestly, I always wanted to be an artist but it somehow felt like an impossible dream,” she admits. It wasn’t until she worked at a big agency (“a windowless cubicle”) designing what seemed like pointless ads, that she realized she would rather fail at being an artist than succeed in advertising.

“I wanted to quit right then and there but instead worked tirelessly during every hour spent outside of that cubical until I was able to support myself independently,” she says. Luckily for us, she eventually took the required leap of faith. Watch as her art slowly, but surely takes over the world.

With almost 100k followers on Instagram, her art reaches both online and offline audiences. But when it comes to the power of words, Maciver turns to her faith. “In terms of words that get me through the day, it’d definitely be The Bible – that’s also added to my understanding of the power of words,” she explains. “Naturally, I’m a bit of a pessimist so it helps to meditate on words of truth and encouragement.”

According to Maciver, the creative process begins with choosing the right words. “Before I even start painting a wall, I think a lot about the concept and what I want to communicate,” she explains. “I love the colors and the patterns and all that, but that’s almost secondary to what I want to say.”

Ola Volo’s murals are a way of reclaiming the city – transforming blank walls into accessible public art. ”Making work accessible: that’s why I love illustration,” the Kazakh-Canadian artist once stated in an interview with The Georgia Straight. “I’m able to communicate a message that can be read without language barriers. And in some ways I think public art can be responsible for that too.”

Her murals display themes from Eastern European folk art with a focus on pattern and narrative. Animals, people, architecture, and nature are seen blended together seamlessly across buildings and walls, creating fantasy scenes that are rich with symbolism.

Volo’s work includes neighborhood murals and corporate commissioned work for a wide range of international clients including Starbucks, Louis Vuitton, Lululemon, Simons, and Honda. She’s also known for creating the largest mural in Canada painted by a woman in Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood.

“My perspective is murals can bring energy to a space,” she says. “It wasn’t till I got the opportunity to do a mural that I got to transform a space, and I got hooked! I loved that it was an idea that could be interpreted and reinterpreted every day by people.”

Prepare to get hooked.

These two anonymous artists from Bordeaux have been capturing the attention of the street art world recently thanks to the stunning large-scale murals they have been painting across Europe.

Usually painted in black, white, and gold, their artworks depict mythological creatures and alchemy motifs while also being rich in details from the past like timekeeping devices, classical architecture, and much more. The recurring figure in their works is monkey and bird humanoid that represents “the two faces of humankind; the monkey being the realist, and the bird being a dreamer.”

Besides their native France, MonkeyBird has also done murals in Spain, Switzerland, Moscow, and many other European countries.

Magee’s talent was also recognized outside Australia, and he had a chance to exhibit his artwork and paint murals in South Africa, Indonesia, Tunisia, UK, and the United States among other countries.

The Water Diviner, Barraba, Australia In 2019, drought has continued to grip NSW, Australia. With over %90 of the state in drought Some areas have recorded the lowest January rainfall totals in 100 years, while for many it was the driest in two decades. The extreme heat continues as most of the state recorded the hottest January average in History. Farm water supplies remain critically low for many areas in western and southern NSW, much of which is experiencing "intense drought". Although the causes of drought are complex analyses have found an increased likelihood of rainfall deficits related to human caused climate change. There is also some evidence to suggest that widespread and prolonged droughts, like the Millennium Drought, are worse than other droughts in recent centuries, and may have been exacerbated by climate change. This mural depicts a local water diviner searching for ground water, using a y-shaped twig or rod or two L-shaped ones. Diviners study the landscape of a farm and walk over areas where they suspect the water may be located, ground minerals and magnetic forces force the sticks to cross or be pushed downwards when water is located. Despite many studies claiming the technique is pseudo-science, Diviners continue to be used throughout Australia as a way of finding ground water. This work was created in regional NSW as a way of bringing tourism into Barraba and stimulating the local economy during the drought. Massive thanks to the Barraba public art committee and the TTTT (tackling tough times together) grant

Artists Ella and Pitr from France, work together to create oversized murals of sleeping giants that they place on streets, building facades, and rooftops. Their artworks are so bigs that they can be seen from above – they take photos of them with drones.

Ella and Pitr met in 2007 and soon started to work together. Their art often revolves around the current social and political issues, but sometimes it’s just fun, playful art with no bigger meaning. They are known for using a limited color palette that covers the colors of the French flag – red, white, and blue.

Most people, when they see these adorable giants, think that Ella and Pitr are a young couple, but they are actually ages 50+ and grandparents! Check out their work below and make sure to follow them on Instagram for more.

Morag Myerscough proves that more is more. Her artwork, which includes paintings, murals, and installations (large scaffold structures adorned with neon geometric patterns and shapes), hardly shies away from color. In fact, it fully embraces it – with vibrant color palettes and uplifting messages splattered in big type, all of which are impossible to ignore.

“I’m not a graphic designer, illustrator, architect or a sculptor, but maybe I’m all of those things,” she told Elephant. “It’s about mindset and trying to create something for people to feel they are part of. My mantra is the Chinese proverb ‘Make happy those that are near and those that are far will come.’”

Mostly working based on commissions, she says she prefers having big projects – the bigger and bolder, the better. “But, I wouldn’t want to do it all the time: it’s manual work,” she adds. “I don’t like repeating things. I do repeat symbols and motifs in my work but I don’t like the idea of repeating projects. I am obsessed with the paint being really flat and the color to be really deep and the edges being really perfect. People ask why I don’t use vinyl, it’s just that I like doing mechanical things by hand.”
