Josephine Lee, AKA Princess Gollum, isn’t your typical Instagram girl. The Korean-American model, visual artist, and global sensation has her own unique style that is part angelic, part gothic. Experimenting with makeup, clothes, and attitude, her creative spirit has caught the attention of brands like Obey, Opening Ceremony, and Milk Makeup, all of which have collaborated with her.

“I’m constantly inspired by the world around me,” admits Lee in an interview with Flaunt. “I never know when I’ll be inspired. It could be of a sculpture made of spider webs then maybe I could be enamored by the trash I see floating down the drain. I’ve also noticed that inspiration is a perspective. I could see something one day and feel nothing at all then see it again in a different light and it would be everything to me.”

Her inspirations resulted in a plethora of personas, with much experimentation. “I’ve been through a few identity shifts in the last 6 years of my internet kingdom before becoming Princess Gollum,” she explained. “Princess Gollum is someone you don’t want to mess with. She’s still sweet and kind but she’s tougher than ever now, she knows what’s going on and she must be respected and protected at all costs.”

Rains, a contemporary rainwear brand, is known for its waterproof designs, with its very name celebrating the basic element to which the products are designed to protect the wearer from: rain. But with almost 200k fans on Instagram and features in esteemed fashion publications worldwide, we can’t blame you for wanting to wear its designs all year round.

Launched in 2012 by cofounders Daniel Brix and Philip Lotko, Rains’ designs are influenced by its Scandinavian heritage. Simple, minimalistic and practical, Rains practices an uncompromising approach to simplicity that is as equally rooted in functionality as it is in relevance.

“We have since 2012 grown into creating an international rainwear brand mixing function with fashion,” said Lotko in an interview with Flaunt, “our product DNA is classic but innovative and we are always searching for new ways of developing the brand – that’s our constant motivation and inspiration.”

“The Scandinavian design DNA is in almost everything we do,” stressed Lotko, “that’s why keeping designs simple and functional is key for us.” Aside from apparel, the brand also sells bags and accessories that are designed to withstand the stormiest of weather, all while speaking to the current tendencies of today. Which is to say: who can stop you from rocking their ultra-cool backpack in summer?

Feeling gutsy? Why not match your shoes with your attitude. You might want to start with Nodaleto. Introduced in February 2019, Nodaleto has been one of the most noticed brands of Paris FW19 fashion week. The design studio, based between Paris and Los Angeles, is led by Julia Toledano (aka “Nodaleto”). Together with her business partner Olivier Leone, she designs both everyday shoes and show-stopping heels.

“I’ve always had a special relationship with shoes,” admitted Toledano in an interview with Harper’s BAZAAR. “Every happy moment of life has become an excuse to buy a new pair of shoes: my birthday, the end of the school year, sometimes for comfort after a breakup.|

According to Toledano (and we couldn’t agree more), to put on a new pair of shoes gives you confidence. “It’s the ultimate feminine accessory,” she notes. “My collection of shoes is like a family; they have some elements in common—the shape, structure—but they all have their own personality.”

Fuelled by their love for multi-artistic mediums, Nodaleto emerges as a creative label that goes beyond shoes. Made in Venice, in the purest Italian tradition, Nodaleto emphasises the nobility of materials and their quality. The leathers are varnished and aged, with an added splash of tangerine tang – the emblematic color of the brand. “I get my inspiration from furniture design, to architecture, a very famous teenage movie from the ’00s or TV shows like Friends,” says Toledano.

London-born New York-based illustrator, Kaye Blegvad, is known for her sensitive work, which often touches upon social issues like mental health and female identity. Working across a variety of different media, her work includes ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and print. She’s also a celebrated jewelry maker, with her line of jewelry, Datter Industries, inspired by ancient artifacts, talismans, ritual, and the natural world.

View this post on Instagram

Today I have some big news about changes at my jewelry line, Datter. This is a bit long but, y’know, I can’t resist sharing my various feelings with you.⁣ ⁣ Jewelry is just one aspect of my work; an outlet to turn drawings and ideas into wearable pieces. I began Datter in 2011 as a sort of experiment – I wanted to see if anybody would be interested in buying the jewelry I’d been making for myself. Over the years it has grown in ways I never dreamed of, for which I’ll always be grateful and amazed. But with this growth, it reached a crossroads: either pursue growth at the expense of personal involvement with the pieces, or strip it back to the core things that made me love making jewelry in the first place. I believe strongly in the value of handmade, and I don’t want to have to outsource or mass produce my pieces. ⁣ ⁣ So, in 2020, I’m changing the way I work with jewelry. I am going to focus less on bulk production and more on occasional one-offs, fine jewelry, and limited editions. In order to do this, I will be retiring the vast majority of the brass and silver jewelry collections. All remaining stock of these pieces are now on sale with 20% off until we run out. Many have very limited quantities remaining, and this will be the last ever chance to get them before they are discontinued!⁣ ⁣ The UK jewelry studio will be closing permanently in mid February. From then on, pieces will only be available from the US studio. The UK studio has limited stock remaining, which is also on sale until we run out. ⁣ ⁣ I’m excited about this new direction for the work I’ll be making, but it still feels like an emotional end of an era for me! I can’t thank you enough for your support over the years. It has been so special to see the people that have responded to Datter and embraced the pieces we’ve made. I’m looking forward to sharing new work with you.⁣ 💘

A post shared by Kaye Blegvad (@kayeblegvad) on

“I’ve been fortunate that I’ve only been asked to work on projects I’m actually interested in,” she told Metal Magazine, when asked about some of her collaborative work. “I think it can happen that you get a job that’s very prescribed, and not something you really want to do, but you do it anyway and that’s got to be a tough way to work. But I think art directors are trying to choose artists who they can tell will be right for the job and that includes being interested. So all of my jobs have been pretty good to me, nice problems to solve.”

With her jewelry work, she combines both her passion for illustration and metalwork, turning her drawings and ideas into unique pieces of jewelry. All pieces start out as models hand carved in wax, which are then cast and finished individually by hand in her studios (based in London and New York). The work is intended to show signs of being handmade, nothing too clean or too perfect, with the process being part of the finished product.

“Making jewelry started as very much an experiment, a hobby,” Blegvad admits. “A friend showed me how to work with casting wax, and as soon as I got my first pieces back I was hooked. It is still so cool to make something and have it transformed into metal. I never get bored of that.”

“I’ve always been interested in meaning being attributed to objects, to wearing things that have some sort of power or story behind them,” she adds. “I’m just lucky that other people seem to want to wear them too.”

NYC-based jewelry designers Elise Shatz and Shelby Scudder launched their brand Garbage NY with a clear goal in mind: creating fine jewelry with little to no waste. “Our name is Garbage, but we care a lot about leaving as little of it behind as possible,” they stress on their website. To minimize overproduction and waste, everything is “made to order” with sustainable practices.

“As of right now, everything is made in NYC, and the majority of our stuff is cast from recycled metals,” they added in an interview with Buzzwork. “However, we acknowledge that there will always be countless ways to improve, especially as the business grows, and we strive to learn more every day. Whether you’re an individual or a business, climate change is destroying the earth and our work is never done when it comes to sustainability!”

According to the two designers, every component is sourced in the United States and assembled locally, with none of their production taking place somewhere they can’t see with their own eyes. And while gold and silver are the lifeblood of their product, they’re also notorious for dumping environmental waste into the earth; so the two found a caster in New York that primarily uses 100% recycled metals. “Some of their materials are sourced from a metal supplier that actively limits their energy, water, and production of toxic waste,” they note on their website.

But while their brand preaches sustainability, their products themselves promote a light-hearted approach. “Avoiding ‘preachiness’ is a huge priority for us, so humor definitely plays a role in the way we communicate our values,” Shatz and Scudder note. Designing everything with a sense of humor and playfulness in mind, their jewelry collections tend to be on the quirky, nostalgic side.

Sounds good to us.

Naida C. Castel aims to create jewelry pieces filled with meaning. Eluding conventionalisms, her work is conceived as unruly and contemporary objects which resonate with everyday life. At times, she experiments with pieces that invoke and explore the spontaneity of forms, permanently trying to display the honesty of the material and its process.

But when it boils down to launching a collection, it all begins with her sketchbook. “I draw all the ideas that come to my mind,” said Castel, explaining her creative process in an interview with Arcana Magazine. She adds that inspiration comes easily while traveling around the globe. “When I like the shapes and random ideas I have got, I decide some viable pieces and I make samples in metal,” she adds. “After making, repeating and trying I put them all together to see how the family looks.”

Usually, she ends up choosing the roughest and most unpredictable shapes, explaining that those are often more attractive and tend to capture those elusive feelings that you can’t explain with words. Based in Barcelona, all of her pieces are handmade and hand-sculpted at her studio. She explains that her pieces are designed and made with care, using good quality materials, such as gold, silver, and raw crystals or gemstones. She also makes sure to recycle metals as much as possible, in order to produce less waste.

Having studied art and product design, she makes sure to travels as much as she can, admitting that she enjoys being constantly on the move, experiencing new cultures, and meeting new people. With an optimistic perspective, Castel says she tends to admire beauty in all of its forms. Take a look at some of her meaningful designs in the gallery below.

According to Dana Roski and Joyce Binneboese jewelry is not unlike candy. “It always feels nice and you can always add more,” they jokingly explained in an interview with Vogue. After running for almost 8 years a concept boutique in Mitte, Berlin, selling labels like Saks Potts and Sandy Liang and a lot of other jewelry items, they decided to try it themselves. Making jewelry that is.

“There is so much available on the market but many collections feel impersonal and replaceable when in fact, jewelry is actually a very personal piece since you wear so close to the body,” they say. “There’s much more to it than just looking good. That’s the reason we were inspired to tell our own stories through our jewelry line.”

Now their brand WALD is celebrated for its unique designs, amassing more than 40k fans on Instagram alone. After a successful first collection, launched in January 2018 WALD Berlin quickly became the jewelry brand to know. Their latest collection, Paris Addis Abeba, is inspired by 90s nostalgia; trips to the beach—a notion to traveling inspirations—from adventures to wanderlust. As such, it incorporates things like green shells, coral, and jasper stones, taking the classic shell trend in a progressive and exciting direction.”We just design what we love and what we want to wear,” they explain. “It is such a dream to see that people really respond to your vision of aesthetics and actually wear it.”

All jewelry is handmade in Germany, hiring a collective of women who would otherwise be unemployed to make the pieces. The environment is also extremely important to WALD, and they make sure that the shells and coral they use are not on the protected species list.

Here’s a reminder: fashion can and should be taken lightly. Creative duo Gil Kahana and Humberto De Sousa seem to have gotten the memo. After sparking a connection while studying Communication Design at Central Saint Martins in London, they went on to launch a business centered around an often underlooked side of fashion: socks.

“It all began one night many years ago,” they recall on their website. “We were joking around and started to ponder a very important question: ‘What if our socks could talk?’ It was one of those light bulb moments, but once the spark had been ignited we simply couldn’t turn it off.”

Jump forward some years later and their online brand, ChattyFeet, now features more than 30 original sock designs, created by designers all over the globe. Their socks feature celebrity guests such as David Sock-Knee and Vincent Van Toe, meant to inspire your creative juices (because having cold feet never helps).

“It usually starts with the name,” Kahana and De Sousa further explained in an interview with Yes I’m a Designer. “We love to use puns like ‘The Sockfather’ or ‘David Sock-Knee’. Then we commission the character illustration and wait for sketches, give feedback, get revisions and repeat until we have a design we’re happy to produce.

Layla Alter’s jewelry brand, Alterita, is here for the rescue! Launched in 2018, it has quickly and rather effortlessly caught the attention of publications like Vogue, Teen Vogue, and Refinery29, thanks to its whimsical designs. “I’m very childish at heart,” admitted Alter in an interview with Teen Vogue, adding: “I’m very connected to my younger self.”

Amongst her more child-like designs are glass charms, cherry earrings, and heart-shaped necklaces—things you can sport at the beach or rock to a late-night outing.

According to Alter, she began collecting her charms in 2018 from Mexico and Southeast Asia and has made a series of one-of-a-kind pieces, which resulted in an exclusive collection with Opening Ceremony. More recent collections feature glass charms handmade locally. “I was like, ‘What would I want to wear on the beach?’ I want to be wearing lemons. I want a headband,” says Alter.

Clearly, this is only the beginning for this young designer.

Here are some of our favorite pairs.
